iGaming Ontario Reports 32% Year-Over-Year Handle Increase in Q2

51 gaming operators from 83 websites claimed $738 million in total revenue, up 35.7% from Q2 2023.

Ontario gaming continued a steady increase with the fourth consecutive quarter of a handle of more than $17 billion.

iGaming Ontario reported a handle of $18.7 billion in Q2 from online sports betting, casinos, and poker on Thursday. The amount wagered jumped 31.7% compared to Q2 2023’s $14.7 billion, besting the 31% from Q1 2024’s $18.4 billion.

During the July 1 through Sept. 30 period, 51 gaming operators from 83 websites claimed $738 million in total revenue, up 35.7% from Q2 2023 and 1.7% higher than from Q1.  

Active player accounts surpassed 1.3 million during Q2 while the active monthly spend per player was $308, up from $284 from the previous quarter.

Casino games thrive

Ontario casino wagering was up 86% year-over-year in Q2, accounting for $16 billion in handle. That’s up 34.5% year-over-year, while the Q2 revenue of $553 million rose nearly 36% from Q2 2023.

This includes slots, live and computer-based table games, and peer-to-peer bingo. 

Sports betting’s $2.2 billion in wagers was up slightly from the previous year, but the Q2 handle was down 12% from Q1. The $167 million in revenue was up 41.5% year-over-year but trailed Q1 by $14 million. 

Peer-to-peer poker’s Q2 handle increased 5% year-over-year to $417 million, also up from Q1’s $402 million. Revenue of $18 million was $2 million more year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter.

These figures come from “all eligible games offered by operators pursuant to an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.” 

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s iGaming and pari-mutuel wagering numbers aren’t included.

Ontario is the most populated Canadian province and the nation’s only regulated one as well. Single-game online Ontario sports betting launched in August 2021, followed by iGaming in April 2022.
