The summer lull has hit the Sunflower State, as the June sports betting handle dropped 18.6% month-over-month.

The Kansas Lottery reported that $140.1 million was wagered in a month with fewer NBA and NHL playoff games to entice bettors. With MLB being the only high-volume major sport, Kansas online sports betting fell from $164.1 million in May to $135.3 million in June.

However, wagering was up nearly 43% year-over-year, and adjusted gross revenue of $9.36 million in June rose 128% from the same month in 2023. June profits were only down $400,000 from May.

The lesser action was helped by the 6.7% hold from adjusted revenue rising a point from May’s win rate. Promotional credits dropped more than $1 million to $3.6 million in June.

Mobile and retail operators paid a combined $936,385 in taxes to the Sunflower State.

Better than last year

Since sports betting began in Sept. 2022, Kansas has surpassed $4 billion in wagers. Nearly half of that has been generated in the first half of 2024, up 25% from this time last year.

Operators surpassed $50 million in adjusted gross revenue with June’s haul, an 84% increase from 2023’s first half. Promotional credits have also decreased exponentially, with online sportsbooks hanging out more than $87 million in June 2023 alone.

Owning Kansas

Operator June Handle Adjusted Revenue
DraftKings $66.2 million $4.7 million
FanDuel $39.8 million $3.9 million
BetMGM $11.2 million $548,838
ESPN BET $7.6 million $0
Caesars $6 million $156,685
Fanatics $4.4 million $0

DraftKings led all Kansas sports betting online operators in June with a handle of $66.2 million while FanDuel was second at $39.8 million. The mobile sportsbooks combined for most of the monthly revenue, continuing their reign in the Sunflower State.

BetMGM generated $11.2 million in wagers while ESPN BET’s $7.6 million came in fourth despite producing $2.5 million less than May’s handle.

Caesars finished with a handle of $6 million, while Fanatics saw $4.4 million wagered in June.

Retail rises

Retail sports betting operators saw wagering rise 51.7% year-over-year to $4.8 million. Hollywood Casino led the Sunflower State’s four brick-and-mortar sportsbooks with a handle of $3.6 million.

Kansas Star generated $536,055 in wagers, while KS Crossing reported a handle of $498,318. Boot Hill accounted for $200,849 in the amount wagered, up more than 215% year-over-year.
