June looked very similar to May in term of Pennsylvania sports betting numbers.
There were handle and revenue drops month-over-month for online and retail sportsbooks as the summer sports lull took over, but there were also significant rises year-over-year in both categories.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported a June handle of $464.5 million, up 24.5% compared to June 2023. Revenue increased 27% year-over-year to $43 million, offsetting a 30% drop from May’s haul.
The 9.3% hold in June was down from the 10.4% win rate produced in May, but sports betting operators continued to spend big bucks in promotional credits to drum up business.
Sportsbooks handed out $13.1 million to customers, down from May’s $17.5 million, with four online operators spending at least $1 million to attract customers. It led to adjusted gross revenue of $29.9 million for the Keystone State’s operators.
Off its 34% tax rate on that adjusted revenue, Pennsylvania filled its coffers with $10.2 million to up the year-to-date total above $89 million.
More betting, less tax revenue
The amount wagered in June helped push Pennsylvania’s handle in 2024 to over $4 billion. With June marking the end of the 2023-24 fiscal year in Pennsylvania, sports betting generated wagers of $8.17 billion, up 13.4% from 2023’s handle.
Gross revenue also increased to $732.56 million from the previous period’s $683.4 million. However, taxable revenue was down 1.5% from 2022-23's $492 million, leading to $1.86 million less for the state’s coffers.
Remaining out front
Operator | June Handle | Gross Revenue |
---|---|---|
FanDuel | $179.2 million | $21.7 million |
DraftKings | $129.3 million | $11.3 million |
BetMGM | $35.3 million | $1.99 million |
BetRivers | $26.1 million | $1.6 million |
ESPN BET | $23.3 million | $1.97 million |
Caesars | $16.5 million | $218,457 |
Online sports betting accounted for $436.66 million of the total June handle and $41.6 million in gross revenue for a hold of 9.5%.
FanDuel led the Keystone State in June with $21.7 million in revenue, down $9.5 million from May’s haul. The state-best $179.2 million handle was boosted by $6.1 million of promo credits, but the online sportsbook still produced a 12.1% hold.
DraftKings’ 8.7% win rate produced $11.3 million in revenue on $129.3 million of wagers. BetMGM held down the third spot once again with a handle of $35.3 million.
BetRivers and ESPN BET were separated by less than $3 million in total wagers, but ESPN BET held a higher hold to nearly match BetMGM’s revenue. Caesars generated $16.5 million in handle to land in the top six, but a 1.3% hold killed the online sportsbook’s momentum.
More competition is coming though, as bet365 held a soft launch this week and, pending final approval, will begin factoring into July’s revenue figures.
Gaming revenue falls
June’s total gaming revenue, including land-based casinos, sports betting, iGaming, and fantasy sports, reached $472 million, up 7% from 2024.
Online casinos contributed $160.6 million of the monthly revenue. That’s down from May’s $174 million but up 18.6% year-over-year. Land-based casinos combined for $277 million, down less than 1% compared to June 2023.
