The dog days of sports betting activity usually happen in the heat of the summer, but things start to wind down in the spring. That downturn hit Pennsylvania sports betting in April as the prolific legal gambling state booked a $646.1 million handle, the lowest of any month in 2024 so far.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released April’s full performance recently, and the final handle tally comes in at a 13% year-over-year increase compared to the $572.2 million from the same period last year, despite the month-over-month dip.
March saw $800.7 million in wagers, which halted what would’ve been the third consecutive month-over-month decline in the category since December’s $925.6 million handle.
Pennsylvania sportsbooks cashed more than $59 million in revenue during April, marking a 9.1% statewide hold. This is also a month-over-month decline compared to March’s $63.7 million revenue performance, but a year-over-year increase from April 2023’s $51.8 million.

In many states, the online sports betting market dominates, and while that is true in the Keystone State, retail sports betting in Pennsylvania is still quite prominent.
