Vermont is set to offer a robust catalog of legal sports betting next month.
The Green Mountain State's Board of Liquor and Lottery published a full list last week that will allow players to wager on everything from major professional leagues, NCAA competitions, international tournaments, and events spanning more than 70 sports.
Many of these options will be available when online sports betting launches on Jan. 11. One of the only things players won’t be able to wager on is college sports involving Vermont schools unless it’s a postseason tournament like March Madness.
Vermont only has one professional sports team – the Vermont Lake Monsters of Minor League Baseball, which is not one of the leagues offered for betting.
The Green Mountain State being in the New England region and bordering the state of New York still produces fans ready to wager on nearby teams in the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB, leagues all listed on the sports betting catalog.
Esports events allowed
Not every legal sports betting state in the U.S. market offers esports wagering, but Vermont added 24 sanctioned esports events to the catalog.
Video game competitions represent a market rising in popularity both in viewership and wagering.
Esports betting offerings in the Green Mountain State include the World of Warcraft Arena World Championship, Madden Championship Series, FIFA Global Series, Overwatch World Cup, League of Legends, and NBA 2K League.
What’s coming in January?
Green Mountain State regulators approved three online sportsbooks: FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics. Pre-registration is already underway so players can have accounts ready to go when Vermont sports betting goes live on that second Thursday in January.
A sports betting bill was signed into law in June. No retail sportsbooks are planned at this time.
In addition to the prohibition of in-state college wagering, any amateur and professional event within the state involving athletes under the age of 18 is not allowed.
