Angels vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 2.94 ERA): Michael Lorenzen was primarily a reliever with the Cincinnati Reds before the Angels signed him and stretched him back out into a starter. The results have been mostly good so far. Lorenzen has picked up two quality starts in his first three chances. Four of the five runs he’s allowed in 2022 occurred in one start when he visited the Houston Astros on April 18.

Dallas Keuchel (1-2, 9.00 ERA): After a decent initial outing against the Seattle Mariners (five innings, three earned runs), Keuchel was clubbed by the Cleveland Guardians to the tune of 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and a walk in just one inning of work. Keuchel came back to blank the Kansas City Royals over four frames on Tuesday but was likely pulled early due to his high pitch count (88) resulting from a lack of control (five walks).

Angels vs White Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Angels should build a big lead against Dallas Keuchel and never look back Sunday afternoon.

L.A.’s lineup is fifth by runs per game (5.01) and third in batting average against lefties (.269) in 2022. Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout going 0-for-8 as a unit at the plate on Saturday was difficult to fathom, considering they were a combined 19-for-51 (.372) over the previous seven days with four homers and nine RBI.

The Angels getting back into the win column begins with their best hitters having rebound performances. Keuchel has looked vulnerable in each of his first three starts of the campaign, and it’s fair to wonder if the 34-year-old southpaw has lost a step after pitching to a 5.28 ERA in 2021. He’s backed by an underachieving bullpen that’s 21st by ERA (3.74) this season.

Michael Lorenzen counters for the Halos, and he should have little trouble negotiating a South Siders lineup that’s 27th in runs per game (3.27) and batting average (.212) this year. Behind him is an L.A. bullpen that has their best guys ready to go following a yeoman outing from Jamie Barria (three innings in relief) on Saturday.

Raisel Iglesias is a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities, and middle relievers Aaron Loup, Oliver Ortega, and Ryan Tepera have combined to author a 1.42 ERA in 2022.

Trend bettors should note that the White Sox are 14-41 in their last 55 games as an underdog, while the Angels are 36-17 in their last 53 games against teams with losing records.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (-112 at BetRivers)

Over/Under analysis

L.A.’s lineup is a truly dangerous one, as they currently top the majors in OPS (.760). After a shocking shutout in Chicago on Saturday, this unit should be ready to bounce back against the White Sox's 16th-rated pitching staff by opposing OPS (.674).

The emergence of Taylor Ward in 2022 has been a pleasant surprise for the Angels, and he has 11 hits in his last 26 at-bats (.423) with four homers and 12 RBI. David Fletcher has three hits in seven at-bats this series after missing the last two weeks due to injury.

The South Siders’ lineup is not devoid of talent, as Tim Anderson tallied his eighth multi-hit game of the year on Saturday. Luis Robert driving in three RBI on Saturday after a dreadful start at the dish has to inspire confidence.

Neither starter should be expected to pitch deep into this one, and the bullpens are both ranked in the bottom half by ERA this year. With the wind blowing out to left-center, enough pieces appear to be in place for an Over.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (-115 at DraftKings)

Best bet

Watching Mike Trout go 0-for-4 at the dish as he did on Saturday is like seeing a unicorn — but in a bad way. The three-time former AL MVP being silenced in this one would be like lightning striking twice, so bettors should be backing Trout to go Over in the prop markets.

Not every sportsbook offers “total bases” bets, but they can be lucrative. Taking the Over on Trout at 1.5 bases implies that he can either hit two singles or gather an extra-base hit of any kind, including a home run (walks don’t count).

Trout is 17-for-48 (.348) lifetime with two homers against Keuchel, and a combined 17-for-41 (.415) with four homers against White Sox relief arms Kendall Graveman and Reynaldo Lopez.

This line looks like an easy one to clear for a player of Trout’s caliber.

Pick: Miek Trout Over 1.5 total bases (+110 at Caesars)
