If the Toronto Blue Jays want to make up ground on the American League East-leading Boston Red Sox, or even just an AL wild-card spot for that matter, the time is now.

Starting pitchers

Thomas Hatch (0-0, 0.00 ERA): Hatch was supposed to make his season debut against the Red Sox last week, but rain postponed the game and he got bumped. However, we get that start a week later. The right-hander had a solid 2020, pitching to a 2.73 ERA in 17 games, but has missed the entire season to this point with an elbow injury.

Nick Pivetta (8-4, 4.37 ERA): Pivetta has come back down to Earth after a hot start. The right-hander is pitching to a 5.35 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP over his last seven starts and the Blue Jays have been a big part of that slump.

Moneyline pick

The Red Sox continue to lead the American League East, having won five of their last six games. They have also had the Jays' number this year, winning six of the last eight matchups.

Despite Toronto's powerful bats, it is struggling to keep up with the best teams in the division. Take away a three-game sweep of the lowly Texas Rangers and the Blue Jays are just 2-8 in their previous 10 games. On top of that, it’s hard to know what the Jays will get out of Hatch in this start, considering he pitched only five innings in his rehab assignment and then will hand the ball to a bullpen that is the constant source of Jays’ fans nightmares.

Toronto is tempting here, considering the matchup with Pivetta, but they are hard to trust. BoSox manager Alex Cora likely has a short leash with Pivetta and can hand the ball to what has been one of the best bullpens in baseball this season.

With a lineup that is arguably as good as the Jays, back the Red Sox at this price.

PREDICTION: Red Sox (-140)

Over/Under pick

Despite the Jays' struggles, they have actually outscored the Red Sox in this matchup this season by a mark of 65-56. This goes in line with the Jays’ mantra this season:

Either win big or lose close — there is seemingly no in-between.

While Toronto may not win this game, with Pivetta on the bump they’ll at least have the chance to score some runs. The Jays have been Pivetta’s kryptonite this season, as he has surrendered 15 runs on 24 hits (including five dingers) in just 16 2-3 innings of work over three starts against Toronto.

On the other side, the Red Sox are scoring 6.5 runs per game over their last six contests, which includes plating 20 runs in their last two games against the Blue Jays. Against Hatch and that Jays bullpen, we like this matchup to go Over once again.

PREDICTION: Over 10.5 (-110)
