The Toronto Blue Jays used a flying start to stun the New York Yankees and snatch the series opener last night, but the Bronx Bombers will look to strike back in this afternoon’s rematch as they try to return to the top of the AL East.

Both teams have been piling up the runs lately, and yesterday’s 8-5 scoreline continued that trend, but my Blue Jays vs. Yankees predictions and MLB picks point to a tighter battle today.

Blue Jays vs Yankees prediction

My best bet
Under 9.5 (-103 at PROLINE+)

My analysis
With both offenses clicking again in yesterday’s battle, the O/U line has climbed to 9.5 for this afternoon and that feels a little high with pitchers of the caliber of Jose Berrios and Carlos Rodon on the mound.

Sure, the New York Yankees have scored five or more runs in seven straight games, but Berrios pitched well against New York earlier this season, allowing just two runs on two hits through seven innings of work.

After a shaky start to July, the Toronto Blue Jays ace looked sharper in his last outing, giving up just one run in a 7-3 win over the Rangers last weekend. I see that form continuing and he’s held both Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton below .200 in their head-to-head clashes.

Meanwhile, Rodon posted a 4.05 ERA in July and he’s allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last three starts. He’s racked up 37 strikeouts in his past five appearances, keeping hitters off balance.

So, I’m picking these two starters to do enough to limit baserunners and make this a low-scoring contest. Though Toronto has played its part in some runfests over the past month, it’s worth remembering that John Schneider’s men are averaging just 4.12 rpg in 2024.

It’s the Blue Jays’ erratic offense that’s nudging me towards the Under here, with plenty of young players getting a chance as the season slips away and the team takes a closer look at the next wave of talent. That’s likely to mean some bumps — and I see today being one of those tricky days at the plate for the visitors.

Blue Jays star player prop

My best bet
Jose Berrios Over 4.5 strikeouts (-127 at PROLINE+)

My analysis
I’ve already made the case for a strong Berrios performance today, and that includes a solid strikeout tally. He’s had five strikeouts in each of his last two starts, and he racked up eight Ks against the Yankees on June 27.

He didn’t walk a single batter against Texas and I’m counting on that same level of control this afternoon to subdue a loaded New York batting lineup. A strong finish to the season would help re-establish Berrios as Toronto’s premier ace heading into 2025.
