Starting pitchers
Drew Smyly (1-2, 6.12 ERA): After allowing five earned runs in three consecutive starts, Smyly came out and shut down the Nationals last week. The lefty pitched six innings and gave up no earned runs in a 3-2 win for Atlanta. That type of performance can’t be counted on every time he goes out there, but Smyly is more than capable of giving the Braves a quality start.
Adrian Houser (3-3, 3.44 ERA): Houser has been great in each of his last two starts, as he gave up two earned in six innings in both of those outings. Houser did have a 5.30 ERA in 11 starts last season, so it’s hard to trust his 3.44 ERA this year. However, the 28-year-old is rolling at the moment, so it’s entirely possible he’ll go out and give the Brewers another great shot at winning.

Moneyline pick
The Brewers are struggling coming into this series, but they have to feel good about their chances of picking up a win in the opener. Atlanta won’t be sending a pitcher more beatable than Smyly to the mound this weekend, and Milwaukee is going to need to do what it can to pounce on him early. With that said, keep an eye on Lorenzo Cain in this game. In Cain’s career against the lefty, he is 4 for 10 with a homer and four RBI. It also wouldn’t be too surprising if Avisail Garcia were to find some success here. Garcia is 0 for 3 in his career against Smyly, but he is batting .318 with a double and five RBI in 22 at-bats against lefties this season.
Houser also happens to be facing the Braves at the right time. Atlanta is already down one of its best hitters, as Travis d’Arnaud is on the DL. However, there is also uncertainty surrounding Ronald Acuna Jr. coming into this game. If the superstar doesn’t play, this Braves lineup will lack its usual explosiveness.
PREDICTION: Brewers ML -126
Over/Under pick
While both of these starters are capable of going out and keeping their teams in this game, it’s also hard to ignore just how hittable each of them is. Smyly was good in his last time out, but he was blown up in each of his previous three starts. He also happens to be facing a Brewers team that is desperately looking to break out of a slump, meaning they won’t take this opportunity for granted. It’s not often they get to face a starter with as little arm talent as Atlanta’s lefty.
It’s not all that different of a situation for Houser, who had five starts in which he gave up four earned runs in the 2020 season but hasn’t done so once in 2021.
