Brewers vs Cubs betting preview
Starting pitchers
Aaron Ashby (0-3, 2.91 ERA): Brewers swingman Aaron Ashby will pair up starts for the first time this season after getting the ball first on Wednesday. He didn’t allow an earned run over 5 2-3 innings against the Padres, striking out five batters but walking three.
Drew Smyly (2-5, 4.08 ERA): Drew Smyly stopped a streak of five straight losing decisions when he got the win against the Reds on May 23. He missed snaring the quality start by one out, throwing a season-high 101 pitches.

Brewers vs Cubs picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
The Cubs should emerge victorious in this battle of the southpaws on Monday night.
The inconsistent Aaron Ashby is in an unenviable spot as a swingman for the Brewers, but he’s had a solid month of May overall, producing four scoreless appearances in five chances. However, the one game he did allow runs in was May 8, when the Braves tagged him for six over only four innings.
Ashby has struggled with control this year, especially in a starting role, where he’s surrendered 16 of his 20 walks on the campaign. Chicago’s lineup is as patient as anyone’s, as they’ve chalked up the third-most walks (52) in the majors over the last two weeks.
The Cubs have had limited at-bats against Ashby, but their lineup as a whole is better against lefties (.242 average) than righties (.230 average).
Ian Happ has a .375 average against southpaws in 2022 and is also batting .323 at home compared to .203 everywhere else. The splits for Nico Hoerner tell a similar story, as he’s batting .353 against lefties, 100 points higher than he hits against righties. His average is .340 at Wrigley Field, but .237 on the road.
Drew Smyly and his 5.31 May ERA don’t inspire much confidence, but bettors should back Chicago to outslug Milwaukee in this one.

Over/Under analysis
With the wind expected to blow out at Wrigley well into Memorial Day evening, oddsmakers can’t set the total high enough.
The bullpens should expect to work early and often on Monday between having an afternoon game, and the fact that two uninspiring starters are on the bump at night.
Though the Brewers boast Josh Hader in the back of their bullpen, they’re still a vulnerable unit, ranking ninth by ERA (3.29). The Cubs’ relief corps is slightly worse, checking in at 14th with a 3.68 ERA.
Hoby Milner (2.89 ERA) is not expected to be at Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell’s disposal for either game of this twin-bill after working back-to-back days. Chicago skipper David Ross is in an even worse bind, with Mychal Givens (2.95 ERA), David Robertson (2.08), and Scott Effross (3.32 ERA) all having worked two straight tilts.
Tyron Taylor has been one of the Brewers’ hotter hitters of late, gathering 13 knocks over his last 37 trips to the plate (.351), and Keston Hiura has four homers in only six May starts. Either or both of them should get their licks in against some subpar Cubs relievers in this one.
Trend bettors should note that the Over is 9-1-2 in the last 12 meetings between these two squads.
Prediction: Over 10.5 (-113 at Unibet)
Best bet
Bettors should back the Cubs to prevail in a wild one at Wrigley Field on Monday night.
Chicago has managed to play about .500 baseball for most of May, going 10-9 over their last 19 games. That’s thanks in no small part to its order, which has averaged 5.21 runs per game across that span.
Christopher Morel has given the Cubs yet another dangerous bat in their lineup this month, hitting .293 with a pair of homers and five RBI since being called up from the minors on May 17. He’s yet to face the Brewers in his brief big-league career.
Pick: Cubs moneyline (+107 at Unibet)
