Dodgers vs Padres Picks and Predictions: Value On Los Angeles Too Good To Pass Up

Despite some key offensive injuries, the Dodgers have won 10 of their last 12 games. So getting the defending champs at plus money is too good an MLB betting pick to pass up — even against the division-rival Padres.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres begin another highly anticipated series (even if neither team is in first place in the National League West), this time at Petco Park.

The opener will feature an excellent pitching matchup as Julio Urias toes the rubber against Yu Darvish. Should you bet on Darvish as a favorite or do the Dodgers have value as slight MLB betting underdogs?

Check out our MLB free picks and predictions for Dodgers vs. Padres on Monday, June 21, with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET.

MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

TwinSpires pegged the Padres -121 to open, bounced between -124 and -127 for a bit, and the moneyline is San Diego -132 at 7 p.m. ET. The Dodgers, who before tonight had a streak of 150 straight games as favorites, are seeing 65 percent of tickets and 78 percent of money. "We’ve seen some respected play on the Padres, and the public is not shying away from the Dodgers in a rare spot for them as a 'dog," TwinSpires trading analyst Zachary Lucas said. The total is up a full run to 7.5, with 72 percent of tickets/71 percent of money on the Over.

Dodgers vs Padres betting preview

Starting pitchers

Julio Urias (9-2, 3.54 ERA): Urias has become yet another weapon in the Dodgers’ rotation. The lefty has an impressive 1.00 WHIP to go along with that solid ERA and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last seven starts.

Yu Darvish (6-2, 2.57 ERA): Darvish has been the Padres’ best starter and despite losing his last two starts, the Padres have won 11 of the last 14 games where he has taken the ball this season. The right-hander has also been excellent in two starts against the Dodgers this season, sporting a 1.29 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 14 innings.

Betting trend to know

Moneyline pick

Both the Dodgers and Padres come into this game feeling good. The Dodgers have won three in a row and 10 of their last 12 overall, while the Padres come into this one off a four-game sweep of the Reds. But both are still looking up at the Giants for first place in the NL West and will want to not lose any more ground.

The Dodgers have gone 10-2 in their last 12 despite dealing with several key injuries in their lineup. But luckily for L.A., it has enough depth to offset those injuries, plus some great starting pitching — and that includes Urias.

The lefty has been solid most of the season but and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last seven starts. While the Padres’ lineup comes into this one feeling good, they have not handled left-handers well: San Diego ranks 19th in batting average and 23rd in OPS when it comes to hitting off southpaws this season.

While Darvish has been excellent against the Dodgers this season, being able to get L.A. at plus money is too tempting to pass up.

PREDICTION: Dodgers (+115)

Over/Under pick

As noted, Darvish hasn’t had many problems with the Dodgers lineup. The right-hander has limited them to just two runs on five hits while striking out 18 over 14 innings in two starts this season. And while the Dodgers have done well to keep rolling, replacing the bats of Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy is a very tough task.

We’ve also already spoken about how Urias should be able to keep down a Padres lineup that doesn’t feature a ton of pop outside of Fernando Tatis Jr., and in addition to this game featuring two excellent starters, the bullpens ain’t bad either.

The Dodgers bullpen ranks 12th in ERA, 13th in WHIP, and sixth in opponent batting average while the Padres relievers are arguably the best group in the Bigs, ranking second in each of those categories.

Betting the Under on numbers this low always feels like a sweat, but all things considered, this one should sneak below the total.

PREDICTION: Under 7 (-110)
