Today’s MLB props and picks
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 1.5 total bases (+110)
With all the Shohei Ohtani hype, we’ve lost track of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and his assault on Major League pitching. He is the No.1 player in Yahoo fantasy and is hitting .340 with 28 homers and 73 runs driven in. He is also 7 for his last 19 and is riding a six-game hit streak while hitting safely in 15 of his last 17 games.
He has a 1.042 OPS against the Rays this year with a .674 SLG percentage. — the league average OPS is .717 this year. This is important as the Rays have the most innings pitched out of the bullpen, which means plenty of those at-bats have come against Tampa relievers which the Jays should see a lot of Saturday afternoon.
The Rays will start lefty Ryan Yarbrough in the matinee. The soft-tossing Yarbrough has been average at best this year and struggles to get deep. With the Jays already seeing a lefty starter last game, Vladdy and his .972 OPS versus LHP should be ready. Guerrero already has two long balls against the Rays’ starter over his 19 at-bats against him.
Joey Gallo Over 0.5 home runs (+250)
Speaking of another Ohtani angle, Joey Gallo is gearing up for his meeting with the Angels' slugger in the Home Run Derby on Monday. Gallo has sent 10 balls into orbit over the last two weeks, as he is 13 for 35 with 10 home runs over that stretch. Of his 23 long balls this season, 12 of them have come in the last 30 days, and he has only failed to hit a homer four times in his last 11 games. It’s safe to say the Rangers’ slugger is swinging a hot stick.
On Saturday, the All-Star will face Oakland starter James Kaprielian and his 2.84 ERA. It may look like a tough matchup, but Gallo has owned the right-hander and is 3 for 5 against the pitcher with a pair of home runs.
Both those home runs came in the last meeting with A’s just two weeks ago. Gallo took Kaprielian deep on a pair of solo shots to the furthest parts of the Oakland Coliseum and now gets to rake at home, where he has hit 57 percent of his home runs this year.
There is also a massive 15 mph wind blowing out to left field at Globe Life Park in Arlington if they choose to open the roof.
Bombs away.
Chris Flexen Over 17.5 outs (-167)
Finally, we finish off the Ohtani heel trifecta with the man he will see on the mound Saturday night in Chris Flexen. The Seattle right-hander has held a sub-4.00 ERA for most of the season and is coming off a one-run performance where he gave up just four hits across six innings. Flexen doesn’t strike out many, but he is a quality arm who keeps the ball in the park, doesn't walk batters and gets the ball on the ground.
Flexen has a 48.5 percent groundball rate, which is a Top-15 mark in the AL. His 1.58 BB/9 is the ninth-best in the American League. Add this up and we get a pitcher who doesn’t waste time and pitches getting outs. This leads to Flexen getting deep into games, which we can take advantage of from a betting angle.
The former KBO pitcher has recorded at least 18 outs in six of his last seven starts and faces an Angels’ lineup that had just four at-bats with runners in scoring position last night. Ohtani can have his, but we just need Flexen to get through six innings.
