The Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers will open a three-game weekend series this evening.

About a month ago, Boston became a sexy future value pick to do some damage in the postseason. Since then, though, they've been mostly underwhelming.

My Red Sox vs. Rangers predictions don't expect things to get any easier when struggling starter Kutter Crawford takes the mound tonight. Find out why in our MLB picks for Friday, August 2.

My analysis

Since the end of June, Boston Red Sox right-hander Kutter Crawford has faced three teams ranking in the Bottom 10 of baseball in chase rate.

Against them, he's eclipsed 17.5 outs just once, and against the other two, he's allowed six earned and five earned runs. Crawford is very dependent on getting chases from his pitches, and when he doesn't, he runs into problems.

What highlights those problems is a barrel rate sitting in the Bottom 8% of baseball, which serves as a double whammy for him in this matchup.

The Texas Rangers enter tonight with the seventh-lowest chase rate in baseball, and although they haven't shown it at times, they have plenty of options to put the barrel on the ball. Bats like Adolis Garcia, Corey Seager, and Josh Jung all have shown the power ability more often than not.

The defending World Series champs are well-positioned to put Crawford in high-leverage pressure spots that will raise his pitch count this evening. They will make him throw competitive pitches in the zone, and when that happens this season, he's punished relatively often.

Red Sox vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Rangers F5 moneyline

Corey Seager to hit a home run

Given the matchup, we expect the Rangers to get after Crawford early, so we will use the Rangers F5 moneyline to start off our same-game parlay.

Meanwhile, Seager is the best-positioned hitter to get the best of Crawford. He maintains a below-average chase rate and, in addition to that, leads Texas hitters in barrel rate.
