Rockies vs Dodgers Picks and Predictions: LA Will Bomb Freeland, Avoid Another Upset

The Rockies upset the Dodgers as massive road underdogs last night. Do we expect to see a repeat again tonight with Colorado again a big 'dog? Considering Kyle Freeland is on the mound, we're not quite as enthusiastic in backing the Rockies.

Starting pitchers

Kyle Freeland (1-4, 5.36 ERA): Freeland hasn’t been very good this season overall, but the lefty has been rock solid as of late. Freeland has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last five starts, and one of those outings was a game in which he turned in a quality start against this Dodgers team. Colorado won’t be looking for much more than that, but it’s worth noting that Freeland is 0-2 with a 6.26 ERA on the road this year.

Tony Gonsolin (1-1, 2.83 ERA): The Dodgers don’t ask Gonsolin to work deep into games but the righty has done a good job as a member of this rotation. The 27-year-old has allowed one or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven appearances but the most he pitched in any of those games was 5 1-3 innings against the Miami Marlins on July 6. So, expect him to pitch four or five innings max in this game.

Moneyline pick

Last night, it was hard to suggest that anybody should back the Dodgers, as they had had no value as massive favorites and there were reasons to believe the Rockies could come away with a win.

Tonight, that isn’t the case — Los Angeles should be able to take this game... rather easily.

While Freeland was solid in his last start against the Dodgers, the team did end up losing 9-2. He also happens to be a bit worse when pitching on the road, which is surprising when considering his home park is Coors Field. Still, the numbers don’t lie and he also happens to be facing a Dodgers team that crushes left-handed pitching.

Los Angeles is tied for fifth in the league in RBIs against southpaws this season, and the team is also fourth in the league in homers off of lefties. On top of that, most of the Dodgers’ star players have been great against Freeland in the past.

Cody Bellinger is 5 for 14 with three doubles and four RBIs against the lefty, while Justin Turner is 13 for 32. Then there’s A.J. Pollock, who is a ridiculous 9 for 25 with a double, a triple, two homers and four RBIs off Freeland. Even Chris Taylor has given him fits, as he had two homers off the lefty in 19 at-bats.

The Dodgers don’t have an ace on the mound or anything, but Gonsolin is rarely the reason this team loses games. He should keep the Rockies offense in line, which is enough when considering their success against Freeland.

Overall, it’s understandable if you don’t want to back Los Angeles straight up, but it could be worth throwing the moneyline into a parlay.

PREDICTION: Dodgers (-260)

Over/Under pick

The Dodgers only scored three runs against Freeland in their last meeting with the lefty but look for them to cash in five or six runs when playing him at Dodger Stadium — making the Over 5.0 on the Dodgers team total a decent play.

It’s just hard to ignore the production these hitters have turned in against Freeland, and the Rockies also have the second-worst bullpen ERA in baseball this year (5.35). Once the Dodgers chase Freeland, the scoring might actually increase.

As for the Rockies, it wouldn’t be surprising if they contribute three or four runs to this total themselves. Gonsolin is a solid option for Los Angeles but he can easily give up a couple runs over his four-to-five innings.

PREDICTION: Over 8.5 (-110)
