The top two teams in the American League Central do battle as the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians continue their series at Progressive Field.

Cleveland trails Chicago by 4.5 games in the division but hopes to close that gap by handing the ball to ace Shane Bieber for Game 1. With the defending AL Cy Young Award winner on the bump, the Tribe will be moderate MLB betting favorites — but is the value with the White Sox as underdogs?

Check out our MLB free picks and predictions for White Sox vs. Indians on Tuesday, June 1, with first pitch scheduled for 6:10 p.m. ET.

White Sox vs Indians betting preview

Starting pitchers

Dylan Cease (3-1, 2.98 ERA): Cease is having a breakout season for the White Sox and bounced back nicely from his first real rough outing by giving up just one run on four hits while striking out 10 Orioles in his last start. The right-hander has allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of his 10 starts this season.

Shane Bieber (5-3, 3.13 ERA): Bieber has been in a bit of a funk this season but he sure looked like his vintage self in his last start. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh against the Tigers and ended up giving one run on one hit while striking out 12 over seven innings. Can he carry that momentum over against a much tougher White Sox lineup?

Betting trend to know

Moneyline pick

Cleveland was able to end Chicago’s five-game winning streak by taking the second game of Monday’s doubleheader, and hope to take the series lead with Bieber on the bump.

But even though Bieber is coming off a strong start, that was against the Tigers and prior to that, the right-hander just looked off and now has to face one of the best lineups in baseball. Heck, even in Bieber’s last start he still surrendered four walks.

Bieber doesn’t seem to have great command of his breaking stuff and is also finding too much of the zone with his fastball. As a result, Bieber isn’t missing a lot of barrels and is getting hit hard. Now, he faces a White Sox lineup that ranks second in scoring, fourth in batting average, and fifth in OPS.

When you consider the way Cease has been pitching this season, with a 1.27 WHIP and limiting opponents to a .213 batting average, and going against a Cleveland lineup that ranks 27th in batting average against right-handers, then you realize the value is with the Pale Hose as underdogs.

PREDICTION: White Sox (+130)

Over/Under pick

It’s not a shocker to see a total of 7.0 with these two starters on the mound. Starting with Bieber: even though it has been a bit of an off-year for him, that’s all relative.

“Off-year” for Bieber still means he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start this season. That includes a start against the White Sox back on April 30, where he gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out 11 in six innings pitched.

On the other side is Cease, who is pitching to a 2.38 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .176 batting average over his last six starts. Plus, the Under is 10-3 in the White Sox's last 13 games, so we’re betting that trend continues.

PREDICTION: Under 7 (-110)
