For the New York Yankees, tonight is about winning back-to-back games for the first time in over a week and staying atop the AL East. For the Texas Rangers, this series is about building momentum for a late playoff push.
My Yankees vs. Rangers predictions like New York's streak to begin in earnest tonight.
Read on for my MLB picks for Yankees vs. Rangers on Tuesday, September 3rd.
Yankees vs Rangers prediction
My best bet
Yankees moneyline (-142 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Since opening at -136, the New York Yankees have taken money and moved a minimum of 10 cents across the board. I projected this price to be -156, so I'll happily take the Bronx Bombers this evening.
There's a decisive pitching mismatch here when you consider the matchup.
Carlos Rodon takes the mound for the Yankees, and while he's been up-and-down throughout this season, he's set up to have a relatively high degree of success this evening.
The Texas Rangers are near the bottom of baseball in plenty of key metrics against southpaws. Their batting average vs. LHP ranks 19th. However, the most pressing aspect is their swing-and-miss rate against left-handed pitchers. The Rangers have the eighth-highest strikeout rate when facing lefties and a whiff rate that also places them in the Top 10. That's significant against Rodon because that's the name of his game.
Rodon has a top-25% K rate, and his career strikeout rate is higher than what he's done this season. I like him to limit Texas' scoring opportunities, and even if the end product isn't a strikeout, he should put pressure on hitters that inevitably force poor swings.
Rangers lefty Andrew Heaney's biggest issue is hard contact, which plays right into the Yankees' hands. At its best, this is the best power lineup in the sport and I'll gladly grab New York on the moneyline as my best bet tonight.
Aaron Judge pick: Who wants a rib-eye?
My best bet
Aaron Judge Over 0.5 RBI (+102 at BetRivers)
My analysis
This is a reasonably off-market price, and we'll happily grab it. The consensus outside BetRivers is this number is around -105 and as high as -115. Aaron Judge has a favorable matchup tonight in a lot of ways against Heaney.
Heaney enters with a barrel rate in the bottom 40% of baseball and a hard-hit rate that's even worse. Heaney is a fastball-heavy pitcher and Judge is the best fastball hitter in MLB. He's also hitting right behind Juan Soto, who is among the best on-base threats around. This covers a lot of methods of successful hitting and getting Judge at plus money feels like a steal.
Yankees vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)
We want more Judge exposure, so we're getting it here in our same-game parlay.
This is a perfect matchup for Judge given Heaney's issues this season. Of course, we like the value slightly better on RBI but also wanted some of this number. We should have mentioned it above, but Judge's numbers against lefties aid our cash. Mainly, he has the seventh-best isolated power in baseball. It's no wonder that his career numbers are so strong against Heaney, with over half of his hits being against the lefty being classified as hard contact.
