My analysis
This may seem bold, given that the Boston Celtics are 11-1 outright in March.
The defending champions deserve praise for staying focused despite not having much to play for in the short term. The No. 1 seed in the East is rather out of reach, with the Cavaliers ahead by five games. Meanwhile, the Celtics have a 7.5-game cushion on the Knicks, who sit No. 3.
As much as Boston has stayed focused amid this idle time, it is still the key reason to side with the home team tonight. The Phoenix Suns have not lost at home since a March 2 rout by the Timberwolves, a comedy the NBA has not noticed as Minnesota appears more at home in Phoenix than anywhere else.
The Suns have not just won six straight at home; they have pulled off two outright upsets in that stretch and gone 5-1 against the spread. Even their road losses have been largely respectable, falling in overtime at Denver and by a bucket at Memphis.
The simplest way to describe this bet is that, at some point, human nature dictates that Boston and Phoenix will each blink and stub their toe against an inferior opponent. That is a springtime inevitability in the NBA.
Logic says the Celtics are consistently more likely to do that, even if they are the superior team. This is an intangible angle, but it is one that should still create value in taking the Suns to continue their home winning streak.
