Jazz vs Nets Picks and Predictions: Mitchell, Jazz Prove Too Much For Kyrie-less Nets

In yet another home game in which the team won’t have Kyrie Irving on the floor, the Brooklyn Nets will try to take down the Utah Jazz at Barclays Center.

The Nets have turned things around lately, as they’re winners of five of their last six. However, the Jazz are also coming into this one having won four of their last five.

Jazz vs Nets picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Spread analysis

The Jazz have quite a few players that are listed as questionable in this game, but we know for sure that the Nets will not have Irving or Simmons. That is going to be quite the blow to Brooklyn’s chances in a meeting with a Utah team that is playing some great basketball right now.

Over the last six games, the Jazz are fourth in the league in defensive rating, which is a whole lot better than their season-long mark of ninth in the NBA. On the other end, Utah is first in the league in offensive rating on the season, so we know they'll be tough to stop.

Donovan Mitchell comes into this game after having scored 73 points over the last two games in victories over the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls. As long as he is in a groove, it isn’t hard to see the Jazz offense operating at a higher level than Kevin Durant & Co.

Durant is going to put up big numbers in this game — especially if Bogdanovic isn’t able to play, as he’s another big body that the Jazz can throw at him — but it’s hard to see how the Nets are going to beat one of the NBA's best teams with a majority of their talent on the sidelines.

Rudy Gobert is also sure to have a big impact on this game, as he’ll be there to prevent Brooklyn from getting easy buckets at the rim. He’s also a fantastic finisher on the other end of the floor, so his offense could ultimately be big in this one. You should also keep your eye on Royce O'Neale in this contest. He's a great wing defender and should be able to Durant trouble in spurts.

The Nets are just 0-10 against the spread when playing at home against teams that shoot 46% or better from the floor on the season. Not having one of the best offensive players in the world out there to try and keep up will continue to hurt this Nets team until he can play full-time. Lay the bucket with the Jazz.

Prediction: Jazz -1.5 (-110)

Over/Under analysis

The presence of guys like Gobert, O’Neale and Conley — if the veteran point guard plays — is the reason Utah should ultimately be able to get enough stops to separate itself from Brooklyn late in this game, but this is still going to be a contest that features a lot of scoring.

The Jazz are first in the league in offensive rating this season, while the Nets are ninth in the NBA — despite having to play without their superstars more often than not.

The Over has now hit in each of Brooklyn’s last three games, with two of those contests seeing the teams combining to score more than 250 total points. The Over is also 9-3-1 in the last 13 games that Brooklyn has played as an underdog, and it’s also 5-1 in the last six games that the team has played as a home underdog.

It doesn’t hurt that the Jazz are second in the league in threes made per game as a team, as the Over will always have a chance when a team shoots it that well. Utah hit 17 threes the last time these teams played, and doing anything like that again will likely result in the Over cashing.

Prediction: Over 228.5 (-110)

Best bet

Durant comes into this game having recorded at least seven assists in six of his last seven games, and he had six assists in the one game in which he failed to hit that threshold.

While the 33-year-old is one of the best scorers to ever play the game of basketball, the Nets have been trusting him with playmaking duties. Durant has responded in a big way, and he’ll extra distributing opportunities with Irving out once again.

The Jazz can be good on the defensive end, but the presence of Gobert could actually help Durant as a passer in this game. He might choose to find his teammates rather than going all the way to the basket and challenging Gobert, one of the best shot blockers in the game.

Brooklyn’s shooters have also been doing a wonderful job lately, so they can be trusted to hit shots once Durant finds them.

Pick: Kevin Durant Over 6.5 assists (+110)
