Rising Sun

The Phoenix Suns welcome the L.A. Clippers to the desert tonight with the Clips coming off a big home win over Golden State on Monday. Los Angeles checked the Warriors to 45% shooting and won the battle on the boards – something Los Angeles hasn’t done often.

The Clippers rank out as one of the worst rebounding teams in the league, sitting 27th in rebounding percentage and allowing foes to wrangle a league-high 12.1 offensive boards per contest. Golden State was short on size with both Draymond Green and James Wiseman out, but L.A. won’t be so lucky against the Suns and center Deandre Ayton.

The 6-foot-11 Ayton is pulling down 10.3 rebounds per game, and while his work on the glass has dwindled a bit since the calendar flipped to 2022, he hauled down 10 boards in the win over Orlando on Saturday and should have plenty of opportunities against an L.A. team leaving shots short in the second of back-to-back games while facing a Phoenix defense limiting visitors to less than 44% shooting from the floor.

Pick: Deandre Ayton Over 8.5 rebounds (-135 at bet365)

Who’s the new guy?

CJ McCollum is the newest member of the New Orleans Pelicans after being dealt to the Big Easy from Portland at the trade deadline.

In his last two showings for the Pelicans, McCollum has had an instant impact on the offense. He’s totaled 59 points on a collective 24-for-37 shooting while also dishing 10 assists. In his three games with New Orleans, the 6-foot-3 shooting guard has also recorded five assists per outing and averages 4.5 helpers on the season.

Tuesday’s matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies will have a crazy pace as both teams like to push the ball in transition. The Grizzlies have been coming out swinging early on during their current five-game winning streak, setting a frenetic tempo in first quarters.

Should we get a track meet in the Smoothie King Center, McCollum will have the green light and be at the wheel of this offense. Not only will he eclipse his points total of 20.5 but he should also top his assists prop (4.5 O/U) as well, with the Grizzlies ranked 26th in assists per field goal allowed.

Put those together and whaddaya got? A "Fat Tuesday" stats sheet for the new guy in NOLA.

Pick: CJ McCollum Over 25.5 points + assists (-110 at bet365)

Teen Wolf

It’s crazy to think that Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards was 19 years old just before the start of the season. The now-20-year-old is having a hell of a February so far, averaging almost 21 points per game including eruptions of 31 and 37 points in the last two outings.

Edwards has made 25 of his last 47 field goal attempts (53%) in those games, headlined by a 13-for-25 effort (including 7 for 13 from 3-point range) in a win over Indiana on Sunday. Minnesota matches up with the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday, with the Bugs placed near the bottom of the defensive totem pole in the NBA.

Charlotte sits 24th in defensive rating and has allowed scores of 125, 119 and 121 over its last three games. The Hornets hemorrhaged 26 and 25 points to Memphis guards Ja Morant and Desmond Bane respectively, and 27 points to Chicago guard Zach LaVine in those outings.

Edwards’ athleticism spearheads the T-Wolves’ transition attack and is an isolation option when the shot clock starts ticking down: two areas the Hornets struggle to contain on defense. He’s topped his points total for Tuesday (24.5 O/U) four times in seven games this month (while also being slowed by a sore knee).

Pick: Anthony Edwards Over 24.5 points (+100 at DraftKings)
