James Harden Over 3.5 turnovers
James Harden is one of the best players in the league and that reputation gives him plenty of free reign when he runs Brooklyn's offense. The nine-time All-Star has always had a high usage rate and he will have an even heavier ball-carrying burden without Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn's lineup. While that will mean lots of assists for the Nets superstar it will also mean plenty of turnovers.
Harden averaged 4.0 turnovers per game last season and turned the ball over four times in the Nets season-opening loss to the Bucks before adding another five turnovers against the 76ers on Friday — and he also had five turnovers in each of Brooklyn's final two preseason contests.
This afternoon, Harden and the Nets will host the Charlotte Hornets. With LaMelo Ball in the backcourt, the Hornets do a very good job of pressuring opposing guards and forcing turnovers, which has us leaning towards the Over 3.5 on Harden's turnovers.
Pick: James Harden Over 3.5 turnovers (-115 at PointsBet)
Wendell Carter Over 7.5 rebounds
The Orlando Magic have looked incredibly bad to start the season, losing each of their first two games by more than 20 points, including Friday's 121-96 loss at home against the Knicks. Now they'll face the Knicks for the second game in a row, this time at Madison Square Garden. The Magic might look like an awful team to back right now but that isn't necessarily true for all their players.
Wendell Carter Jr. was acquired by Orlando in the trade involving Nikola Vucevic last season and averaged 8.8 rebounds in 26.5 minutes per game in 22 contests with the Magic. He signed a four-year, $50-million deal earlier this month and led the team in rebounding during the preseason, pulling down 8.8 boards per game in 25.6 mpg. After grabbing eight rebounds in just 19 minutes in Orlando's season-opening loss to San Antonio, he logged 30 minutes against the Knicks and pulled down 11 rebounds.
While there have been questions about whether Carter can coexist with fellow big Mo Bamba, Friday's performance showed they can both thrive on the floor at the same time. And with the Knicks giving plenty of minutes to Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson, don't be surprised if the Magic give lots of playing time to Carter and Bamba to match up against them. Expect another strong evening from Carter on the boards and take the Over 7.5 on his rebounds total.
Pick: Wendell Carter Over 7.5 rebounds (-115 at bet365)
Harrison Barnes Over 16.5 points
Barnes has had a bit of an up-and-down career since being drafted by the Warriors in 2012, but he's off to a fantastic start this year. Barnes went 10 of 19 from the field for 36 points in the Kings season-opening win against Portland, then added 25 points in Sacramento's loss to Utah on Friday.
While he isn't typically going to drill eight 3-pointers as he did against the Blazers, the fact that he has logged at least 37 minutes — and attempted at least 19 field goals — in each of Sacramento's first two games suggests that the volume will be there.
Tonight, Barnes and the Kings will host his former team, the Warriors. Golden State is playing at the fastest pace in the league this year and ranked third in the league in pace last season.
With the Warriors playing at such a quick tempo and Barnes having the green light to shoot, take the Over 16.5 on his points total.
Pick: Harrison Barnes Over 16.5 points (-120 at PointsBet)
