Two teams in the NBA’s scrap heap square off in Charlotte, as the Hornets host the San Antonio Spurs.

San Antonio has the worst record in the West at 7-33, lost three straight and eight of their last 10, and are down a must-see 20-year-old rookie. They’re 4.5-point underdogs in the NBA odds to the 8-30 Hornets, who have just one win in their last 18 games.

There’s nothing pretty about this one, and laying a wager down might be the only thing able to make this watchable. That’s why I’m here: to give you my free NBA picks and best bet for Spurs vs. Hornets on Friday, January 19.

Spurs vs Hornets odds

Spurs vs Hornets predictions

This is the second and final meeting between the San Antonio Spurs and the Charlotte Hornets this year, and the second one in eight nights. The Spurs won the first matchup on their home court, blasting the Bugs 135-99, but the dynamics are different this time around.

It’s already been announced that 2023 NBA top pick Victor Wembanyama will be out, for rest purposes. Wemby was a stud in that first matchup with game highs of 26 points and 11 boards while adding a pair of blocks. The Hornets shot an abysmal 36% from the field, including a woeful 10-for-34 from 3-point range.

These teams are nearly identical in their struggles. Defensively, they are two of seven teams in the league that are surrendering better than 120+ points per game.

Charlotte and San Antonio are tied for the third-worst field goal rate allowed, with teams hitting at a 49.9% clip. The Hornets are dead-last in 3-point shooting defense, with teams hitting at a 40.2% clip. The Spurs are 28th, at a grim 38.7% allowed.

But they’re not outscoring those woes. Offensively, they’re Bottom-6 with the Spurs putting up 111.9 points per game and the Hornets at 108.4, which is third-worst in the NBA.

San Antonio’s win over Charlotte broke what was a five-game losing skid. But the Spurs have gone sub-100 in their last two games, including a 117-98 drubbing in Boston last time out. And that was with Wemby in the lineup.

Charlotte lost 132-112 to New Orleans in their last game, which should be considered a scoring bonanza. They had scored 99 points or less in four of their previous five matchups.

Both teams have gone Under their respective totals in three of their last four games, and that should be the case here on Friday.

My best bet: Under 237.5 (-110 at DraftKings) 50% boost available

Spurs vs Hornets same-game parlay

Under 237.5

Terry Rozier Over 24.5 points

Devin Vassell Under 2.5 threes

50% boost available

The losing doesn’t seem to affect Terry Rozier’s game, as the veteran Hornets guard has been filling it up as of late.

Rozier is coming off a 25-point, 4-assist game last time out against the Pelicans, and he’s gone for more than 24.5 – his set total Friday – in five of his last eight games.

One of those games was against these same Spurs, where he went for just 16 points in 28 minutes of work, but he should be able to find the range. That game against the Spurs marked the return of LaMelo Ball to the lineup from injury, which can somewhat explain why Charlotte was out of sync.

Rozier has benefitted with another threat on the court, averaging 25.5 points in the two games since.

Let’s wrap a three-leg SGP on the shooting slump of Spurs’ wing Devin Vassell. He’s coming off an 0-for-5 mark from downtown against the Celtics, the identical output in his previous game against the Hawks.

Vassell has actually gone Under 2.5 3-point makes in five straight and eight times in the last 11 games.

One of those games was against the Hornets, where he went 1-for-3 from distance. He may get more touches without Wemby in the lineup, but I’m banking on his struggles to continue for one more night.
