Spread analysis
Not only is Los Angeles 5-1 against the spread in its last six games as a favorite, but Phoenix also happens to be 0-4 ATS in its last four. The Suns simply have nothing to play for anymore, as they've locked up the top seed in the entire league and they also broke their franchise record for regular-season wins last night. After winning last night against the Los Angeles Lakers, you shouldn’t be surprised if the Suns end up sitting quite a few key rotation pieces tonight. They haven’t listed much on the injury report as of yet, but you’ll want to really pay attention to any announcements this afternoon.
The Clippers, meanwhile, have won and covered in three of their last four games, and they could be getting Powell back to join Paul George, who already returned last week. This Los Angeles team is finally getting healthy, which makes it one of the better teams in the Western Conference right now. In the four games since George's return, the Clippers have the best offensive rating in the entire league — and it really hasn’t been close.
Los Angeles’ offensive rating in that span is up at 131.4. The Miami Heat are second at 124.6 over the last four. Look for the Clippers to continue to cook on offense, especially against a Suns team that is just 10th in the league in defensive rating over the last 10 games — which is a significant drop from the team’s season-long ranking of third in that category.
Ty Lue’s team also happens to compete at a high level every single night, so the Clippers’ motor is something that will be important tonight. If Los Angeles is going all out, it’s hard to see how Phoenix matches that energy. The Suns were likely celebrating their record-breaking win last night, and it’s just hard to envision them showing up for what is ultimately a meaningless game in the grand scheme of things.
Prediction: Clippers -2 (-108 at WynnBet)
Over/Under analysis
The Suns were good for a nightly Over when Chris Paul was out with his injury, but the Under is 4-2 since he returned to the lineup. The Suns are just 23rd in the league in offensive rating in that six-game span, and they just haven’t quite been consistent on that end just yet — although a 96-point performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder definitely skews those numbers a bit.
Meanwhile, the Under hit in the Clippers’ 119-100 win over the New Orleans Pelicans last game, and Los Angeles knows that it needs to really lock in defensively in order to win tonight even with the Suns potentially operating with a skeleton crew.
The Under is actually 3-0 in the three previous meetings between these two teams this season, and it’s also 6-2 in the last eight games the Clippers have played against teams with winning records. The Under is also 5-2 in Los Angeles’ last seven games as a favorite.
The Clippers have also slowed things way down, playing at the third-slowest pace in the NBA since the beginning of March. Normally, the Suns would counter that with a run-and-gun pace ranking third in that same span, but with the stars potentially sitting out, the energy might not exactly be through the roof.
Prediction: Under 226.5 (-110 at DraftKings)
Best bet
There’s a reason the Clippers are favored in this meeting with a much better Suns team, and it’s because it’s not often you get a game that means so little to one of the teams. Phoenix definitely doesn’t want to lose momentum going into the playoffs, but it’s also just very hard to get up for a game after having such a big win the night before. The Suns were surely celebrating their 63rd win last night, and that’s going to make it nearly impossible for them to match their previous intensity here.
The Clippers also happen to be 29-13 ATS when playing at home in games with a total of 220 or higher over the last two seasons, and Los Angeles has won those games by an average of 9.3 points. On top of that, the Clippers are 31-19 against the spread when facing teams that make at least 46% of their shots in the second half of the year over that same span.
Pick: Clippers -2 (-108 at WynnBet)
