The top-seeded Indiana State Sycamores are having the best season since Larry Legend last appeared and are short favorites to defeat the Seton Hall Pirates in tonight's National Invitation Tournament final.

The Sycamores made their way through the March Madness bracket and reached the NIT final by defeating Utah 100-90, while the Pirates routed Georgia 84-67 to set up tonight’s highly-anticipated NIT Final matchup.

Indiana State vs Seton Hall picks and predictions

The Indiana State Sycamores and Seton Hall Pirates may not have a “One Shining Moment” video dedicated to the winner, but our two featured teams are still playing for something that matters to them and it should be a memorable game.

The Sycamores are a high-scoring bunch. They’ve dropped a minimum of 76 points during their NIT run and have dropped 100+ twice. Indiana State center Robbie Avila has captured the hearts of the Sycamores faithful, and the big fella has delivered for much of this season. He’s their leading scorer (17.5 ppg) and the most widely-known Indiana State player since Larry Bird.

Avila has been stout during this run, as he’s beaten his 17.5 ppg average in his last two, but he has a difficult matchup against a bulkier and lengthier Pirates defense, and it might be hard for him to reach his 17.5-point scoring prop.

The Pirates play a stingy, aggressive, Big East-type of defense. They are physical inside with good rebounding skills on the defensive end of the floor with the second-best offensive rebounding program in their conference.

Seton Hall allows a stingy 48.9% from inside the arc, as their size plus the shot-blocking skills of senior center Jaden Bediako typically makes life miserable for opposing big men like Avila.

Finally, Avila has outperformed his scoring prop in his last two games but has scored 17.5 or more points just twice across his previous five and in three of his last six matchups. He’ll have his hands full tonight getting his buckets and snaring offensive caroms against the more aggressive and lengthier Pirates defense. Avila has been awesome this season for the Sycamores, but he won’t clear 17.5 points tonight.

My best bet: Robbie Avila Under 17.5 points (-110 at Pinnacle)

Indiana State vs Seton Hall same-game parlay

Robbie Avila Under 17.5 points

Indiana State moneyline

Under 160

Our three-leg same-game parlay ticket correlates well with my best bet, as Avila doesn’t have to have a big-scoring night for Indiana State to win.

Avila contributes offensively in other ways, and his supporting cast is tremendous. Indiana State is third nationally from the charity stripe and is 30-3 this season as the favorite.

Seton Hall is 7-10 this season as the underdog, and this is a big ballgame for both programs. Indiana State is the side that relies more on its offense, and the wide-open looks they’ve been draining from downtown may not be there tonight against the longer and aggressive Pirates defense.
