ACC Championship: Clemson vs Notre Dame Picks

The Clemson Tigers lost to Notre Dame on November 7. But that was without Trevor Lawrence, who will be under center for the rematch in the ACC Championship on Saturday.

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

We got an instant classic when these two teams met earlier in the season, with the Fighting Irish pulling off a huge 47-40 overtime upset in South Bend. But we all know why oddsmakers expect a different result this time: Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t play in that November 7 meeting, giving way to talented freshman D.J. Uiagalelei.

Lawrence is back, and Clemson hasn’t lost since that game.

Two weeks ago, the Tigers made easy work of Virginia Tech, winning 45-10. Lawrence only threw for 195 yards in that game, but he has nothing to prove. The Clemson junior has thrown for 2,431 yards, 20 touchdowns and three picks on the season. Running back Travis Etienne is as dangerous as anyone in the country when he touches the football, pacing Clemson with 758 yards rushing and 12 scores.

Imagine being Notre Dame, having already beaten Clemson once this season—and still being double-digit underdogs. The Irish are a perfect 10-0, are coming off a convincing 45-21 win against Syracuse, and quarterback Ian Book has become the senior leader the Irish were hoping he would be. After a slow start, Book has thrown for 2,382 yards, 15 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He’s done a fantastic job of limiting turnovers and letting Kyren Williams do his thing. In the first meeting, the Irish running back gashed the Tigers for 140 yards and three touchdowns.

This line has jumped more than three points with the public hammering Clemson, and I understand why—Lawrence is arguably the best player in the country. Still, Uiagalelei had 439 yards and three scores in South Bend, and the Irish were still able to win outright.

PREDICTION: Notre Dame +10.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

This number appears to be inflated somewhat, based on the shootout that we saw earlier in the season. I expect better performances out of both defenses based on that meeting, and the Under is 6-1 in Notre Dame’s last seven neutral site games.

If the Irish try to outscore the Tigers, they’ll be playing right into Clemson’s hands.

PREDICTION: Under 60 (-110)

Team Total Pick

Yes, the Irish defense gave up 40 points to the Tigers last time out. However, Notre Dame’s unit is ranked 14th in the country and held an explosive North Carolina offense to only 17 points less than a month ago.

PREDICTION: Clemson team total Under 35.5 (-122)
