Arizona State vs UCLA predictions
Arizona State +3.5 (-110)
As far as passing defenses go, it doesn’t get much worse than Chip Kelly’s UCLA team this year. The Bruins are giving up 330.3 passing yards per game, which is worse than all but four teams in the nation. Considering the Sun Devils just figured out their passing game in a 35-13 win over the Colorado Buffaloes, the timing couldn’t be better for this Arizona State offense.
Last week, Jayden Daniels was 18 for 25 with 236 passing yards against Colorado and that was more than enough for the Sun Devils to start humming offensively. Daniels’ 9.4 yards per attempt were the highest he’s had since a Week 1 meeting with an FCS opponent, and Arizona State’s offense completely opens up when Daniels is hitting his receivers.
UCLA doesn’t have the kind of secondary to stick with the Sun Devils’ receivers, and that will give running backs Rachaad White and Daniyel Ngata more holes to hit on the ground. Also, Daniels is an excellent runner himself, so if the linebackers have to drop into coverage at all, look for the junior to make the Bruins pay with his legs.
Defensively, Arizona State’s prior meeting with the BYU Cougars should help them prepare for this showdown with UCLA. BYU quarterback Jaren Hall is a talented thrower and runner, much like UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The Sun Devils didn’t do well in that meeting with the Cougars, but that shouldn’t matter. They’re aware of the difficulties that come with facing a quarterback that is a threat to break off long runs, and that should serve them well. This is going to be a somewhat high-scoring game, but an extra stop or two will go a long way.
Over 55.5 (-110)
As previously mentioned, this game likely won’t feature a whole lot of stops, but the team that wins will be the one that gets them at the right times. Last week, Arizona State and Colorado went Over the total, and UCLA has gone Over in two of its last three. The matchups in this one are what makes this likely to turn into something of a shootout, as the Bruins don’t have the right personnel to keep this Sun Devils team from scoring. Also, for what it’s worth, the Over is 6-3 when UCLA is coming off a game that went Under since 2018.
It’s also worth noting that the Over is 6-2 in Arizona State games in which the team has failed to cover in two of its last three games under Herm Edwards. It’s also 11-4-1 when UCLA is coming off an Under with Chip Kelly at the helm.
