The Syracuse Orange will try to snap their opponent's four-game winning streak as they host the surging Boston College Eagles at the JMA Wireless Dome tonight.

Syracuse (4-4) has yet to win an ACC game in 2023. However, the college football odds still mark the Orange as slight favorites over Boston College (5-3), which has won four straight games to put itself on the verge of bowl eligibility.

Syracuse will get to play in its first home game in over a month tonight, but questions remain over whether its struggling offense can ever get back on track.

We’ll break down how this matchup should play out in our free college football picks and predictions for Boston College vs. Syracuse on November 3.

Boston College vs Syracuse picks and predictions

It’s now official: Syracuse’s season has gone off the rails. It was excusable for the Orange to lose consecutive games to the Clemson Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels, and the Florida State Seminoles. A 41-3 loss in Tallahassee was disappointing, but it marked the end of the worst part of the Syracuse schedule.

But there were such caveats when the Orange proceeded to lose 38-10 at the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Syracuse offense has now scored 34 points in total over its last four games. The frequent three-and-outs have also taken Syracuse’s solid defense and put it under constant pressure, and the Orange have allowed an average of 37.5 points per game during their losing streak.

Now, Syracuse finally heads home to play one of the hottest teams in the ACC. Boston College has won four straight, albeit against less than inspiring competition. In fact, the Eagles were likely disappointed by their performance last week, when they squeaked past the woeful Connecticut Huskies at home by a 21-14 score.

Boston College has one of the most perplexing resumes in college football. They barely beat the Holy Cross Crusaders and lost to the Northern Illinois Huskies, but nearly beat Florida State. Even amid a four-game winning streak, their performances seem up and down, with three wins coming by one score.

I am not a big fan of playing the spread or the moneyline on this game, as I’m not sure how the return to home will impact Syracuse, or whether Boston College has really proven anything over its last four games. However, it’s clear that these offenses are struggling, and that should lead to a relatively low-scoring game.

I’ve already talked about how much the Orange have struggled on offense over the past month. The loss of Orande Gadsden II really seems to have thrown off Syracuse’s rhythm. Quarterback Garrett Shrader hasn’t thrown for 150 yards in any of his last three games, and has lost yardage overall on the ground during that time.

At home, the Orange should at least feel a bit more comfortable. It also helps that they’ll be playing an Eagles defense that is allowing 6.2 yards per play on the year. I can’t expect Syracuse to score much, but they should at least move the ball, which will help a talented defense that simply hasn’t been able to stay off the field.

The Boston College offense is only decent, averaging 28.1 points per game against mediocre competition. The Orange defense should have a bounce-back effort on Friday, especially against an Eagles offense that put up just 21 points against UConn last week.

Many books still have the total of this game at 51 points, which seems too high given the tepid offensive output of both teams and the talent on Syracuse’s defense. I’m betting the Under on Friday.

My best bet: Under 51 (-110 at DraftKings)

Boston College vs Syracuse same-game parlay

Under 51

Boston College moneyline

Garrett Shrader Under 196.5 passing yards

My same-game parlay for this game starts with taking the Under at 51 points. As I said above, I can’t trust the Syracuse offense or doubt the Syracuse defense, particularly against a largely untested Boston College team, so a low-scoring affair seems likely.

I’m tying this to a bet on Boston College to win this game outright. The Orange may be playing at home, but I can’t fully ignore the fact that Syracuse is on a four-game losing streak in which they haven’t even been competitive in a single contest. Meanwhile, the Eagles are coming off four straight wins. With a slight plus number on the Eagles, a Boston College moneyline bet looks good.

Finally, I’m rounding out the SGP with a bet on Shrader to hit the Under on his passing yardage prop. This correlates well with the other two pieces of our parlay, and Shrader hasn’t hit 200+ yards in a game since facing the Army Black Knights back on September 23. If this game is low-scoring, that trend should hold up.

Boston College vs Syracuse spread and Over/Under analysis

Syracuse opened as a three-point favorite over Boston College at home. The line has tightened since then, with the consensus spread sitting around Syracuse -2. However, there are a lot of different lines out there, from Orange -1.5 to Boston College +2.5, depending on what you’re looking for.

Syracuse hasn’t covered in any of its last five outings, and the Orange are now 3-4-1 against the spread this season. Boston College has been up and down against the number all year and boasts a 3-5 ATS number.

While I think the Eagles are the smarter side to play in this game, I’m staying off the spread. I feel there’s just too much uncertainty here – both because of Syracuse’s abysmal play over the last four games and Boston College’s lack of quality opponents during its winning streak – to feel confident on either side of the line. If you want to play, I suggest taking Boston College on the moneyline, where you can get a plus number in what feels like a tossup game.

The total on Friday’s game opened at 51 points. That remains the consensus Over/Under, though some books have moved down to 50.5 points. You can get as good as -105 at 50.5 on the Over, or take -110 on the Under at 51 points flat.

These teams have been polar opposites regarding the total this year. The Over is a dominant 7-1 in Boston College games this season, while the Under has posted a 6-2 record this year when Syracuse plays.

While those trends may take you in opposite directions, the Under is the clear play here. Syracuse has been giving up more points against top-tier opponents but should be able to keep the Eagles under wraps. Meanwhile, there’s no sign that the Orange will suddenly figure things out on offense to any great degree after four weeks of absolute failure on that side of the ball. Take the Under with confidence.
