College Football Picks and Predictions Week 6

Notre Dame are almost three-touchdown favorites against Florida State. We're wary of a spread that size this season, but the Seminoles have looked pretty bad so far...

Well, I hope you all took my advice last week and faded me, because unfortunately the cold streak with my college football picks continues.

To be fair, it's been difficult to get a feel for college football betting this season. I mean, Mississippi State upsets LSU, then loses outright to Arkansas as double-digit faves. And check out this great stat dug up by the awesome Chris Fallica: double-digit faves are just 17-34 ATS this season and have lost 11 times straight up.

Keep that in mind as the Triple Option returns with my best college football picks and predictions for Week 6. Fade Away.

NCAA Football Picks and Predictions for Week 6

Florida Gators vs Texas A&M Aggies

Let’s start with a noon kickoff SEC showdown as the Florida Gators travel to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Gators have looked awesome through their first two games, particularly the passing game, which led the way in putting up 89 points on South Carolina and Mississippi. That passing game is led by the Kyles, QB Kyle Trask and TE Kyle Pitts. Trask is completing 71.8 percent of his passes for 684 yards with 10 touchdowns and one pick.

Pitts is his favorite target, hitting him 12 times for 227 yards and six scores, but what makes the Gators hard to contain is all the other speed they have. That could be a problem for the Aggies, who just got run over by Alabama and their similar multitude of weapons last week.

Now, the A&M defense will be a little better than what Florida has faced so far this season, but with the way Kellon Mond and the Aggies offense is playing, they won’t be able to keep up with the Gators in a shootout.

This one might not reach the blowout status that Alabama put up against the Aggies, but the Gators at less than a converted touchdown is too good to pass up.

PREDICTION: Florida -6.5 (-110)

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State has bounced back nicely since its opening week loss to Louisiana, getting a tough road win at TCU, then upsetting Oklahoma as two-touchdown underdogs last week. (See? A lot of that going around). This week, the Cyclones welcome Texas Tech to town.

The Red Raiders enter this game with some injury issues, as starting quarterback Alan Bowman is listed as day-to-day with an ankle injury. Bowman had to leave last week’s game against Kansas State in the first quarter after taking a late hit to his lower leg. Henry Colombi’s numbers were solid in relief, but the Red Raiders were only able to generate 21 points in that game. If Bowman can’t go or is limited, we could see more or the same.

For the Cyclones, Brock Purdy looked much better the last two weeks, completing 64 percent of his passes and throwing no picks. But Iowa State has leaned heavily on running back Breece Hall during this turnaround. The sophomore back has nearly 400 yards on 66 carries already this season. So, you can bet Hall will continue to be a focal part of the offense.

With Bowman limited and Iowa State turning back to the run game, this total might be a touch too high.

PREDICTION: Under 64.5 (-110)

Florida State Seminoles vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Here’s the portion of the article where you can really roll your eyes at me. We’re laying almost three touchdowns with Notre Dame this weekend against Florida State.

“Wait, didn’t you just say be wary of double-digit faves?”

Why yes, yes I did. But one of those double-digit faves that lost outright this season was the Seminoles, who dropped a 16-13 game as 13-point home faves against Georgia Tech. Then they got absolutely stomped by rival Miami, and then they needed a second-half comeback to beat FCS Jacksonville State.

So, yeah. Florida State is an absolute mess right now. The offense is averaging just 3.9 yards per play, which ranks 70th in the NCAAF (74 FBS teams have played so far this year). QB Jordan Travis came in last week to save the Seminoles’ bacon. But once again, that was against Jackson State. Notre Dame is allowing just 282.5 yards per game and has given up just 13 points over its first two games.

Meanwhile, the Irish still have Ian Book at quarterback, while they deploy a three-headed monster at running back in Kyren Williams, Chris Tyree and C’Bo Flemister. That balance will give the struggling Seminoles fits.

You could say the Irish might be a little rusty after being off for two weeks due to a COVID cancellation, but the Seminoles look rusty and they’ve played three of the last four weeks.

PREDICTION: Notre Dame -20.5 (-110)

Last week's NCAAF record: 1-2
Season to date: 4-8

It’s not an interesting story. Seriously.
