Fresno State vs Hawaii predictions
Fresno State -11 (-110)
Fresno State has been a covering machine in 2021, going 4-1 ATS en route to a 4-1 record straight up with the only loss coming to Oregon in a game in which it had the lead in the fourth quarter. This team is legit.
Sure, there was the slip-up last week when it needed a second-half rally to get by lowly UNLV, but can you really blame the Bulldogs, considering the scheduling spot? The Bulldogs entered that game fresh off a 40-37 upset of UCLA in thrilling fashion, and star quarterback Jake Haener was hobbled after sustaining an injury at the end of that comeback.
This is a team that’s been lighting up scoreboards, averaging 42 points and 523 yards of total offense per game. Haener has played himself into the NFL Draft conversation while leading the third-ranked passing offense (397.6 passing yards per game).
While most would consider traveling to Hawaii a continuation of tough scheduling, this game must be taken into context. Hawaii won’t be playing at Aloha Stadium this year after it was deemed structurally unsafe. Home games will be held at a retrofitted on-campus facility that seats only 9,000 fans, and every single one of those seats will be empty due to COVID restrictions.
Without any home-field advantage, there will solely be the game to focus on for both teams. Fresno will also have revenge on its mind after Hawaii pulled off a 34-19 upset win over the Bulldogs to begin the 2020 season. Fresno has done nothing but improved drastically since that loss, while Hawaii has stumbled in the second year under Todd Graham. This will be a quiet stadium with nothing but revenge on Fresno's mind. Back the Bulldogs.
Fresno State team total Over 38.5 (-105)
This Fresno State offense is absolutely rolling. The Bulldogs are averaging 42 points per game this season, and they've already faced at least two defenses (Oregon and UCLA) that are vastly superior to Hawaii on the defensive side of the ball.
They should find little difficulty in moving the ball here against a Hawaii defense allowing 32.4 points (110th) and 423.8 total yards (102nd). The best matchup will occur in the passing game, where Fresno’s No. 3-ranked aerial attack should feast on a Hawaii secondary allowing 273 passing yards per game (112th).
Fresno’s defense has been underrated, holding both Oregon and UCLA below 400 yards. With that being the case, we won’t target the full game Over and will instead stick to the Bulldogs’ team total of 38.5.
Expect Haener to have a field day here while targeting the Mountain West’s best receiving corps led by Jalen Cropper (455 yards, eight TDs) and Josh Kelly (401 yards).
