Ole Miss vs Alabama predictions
Alabama -14.5 (-110)
This is a game both Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin definitely had circled on their respective calendars. Alabama won last year’s matchup, but Ole Miss gave them a scare in a high-flying game that ended 63-48. The Rebels covered as 24-point underdogs in that game, so they are getting a little more respect this time around at just +14.5.
Mississippi enters this game at a perfect 3-0 (2-0-1 ATS), led by the country’s No. 1 offense and betting favorite to win the Heisman, Matt Corral. The junior signal-caller is completing 68.8 percent of his passes for 997 yards with nine touchdowns and zero interceptions while adding another 158 yards and five scores on the ground. And, in last year’s game against Bama, he went 21 of 28 for 365 yards with two TDs and no picks.
But, the case can be made that this Alabama defense is the much better unit compared to last year’s squad. Alabama is allowing just 3.9 yards per carry this year and ranks 23rd in opponent yards per pass attempt, against a tougher schedule than Mississippi’s.
Additionally, Corral has been a different quarterback away from home in his college career. At home, he has passed for 27 touchdowns compared to five picks, while on the road he has 16 touchdowns to 13 picks.
Countering Corral is another Heisman frontrunner in Bryce Young. While he had some hiccups against Florida, the sophomore signal-caller has been mostly awesome. Young is completing 72.4 percent of his passes for 1,124 yards with 15 touchdowns to just one interception. It also helps that top back Brian Robinson should be healthy for this matchup.
Now, everyone is expecting Kiffin to throw the kitchen sink at Alabama this week, but if you think Nick Saban doesn’t have something special planned after watching Ole Miss put up 48 points last year, I have a bridge to sell you.
On top of that, yes, Bama gave up 48 points, but still won by 15 on the road. The Rebels don’t have the luxury of home-field advantage this time around. Lay the points with 'Bama.
Under 80 (-110)
You almost have to bet the Under 80 just out of principle in this matchup. It’s the biggest total on the board in college football this week. Yes, I know these two teams went for over 100 points in last year’s meeting and they are combining to average nearly that number this season, but I just don’t see this game playing out that way.
While Matt Corral and Ole Miss love to sling the ball all over the field, Mississippi is arguably a better rushing team than it is a passing team. And, you know Lane Kiffin will want to try to keep the ball out of Bryce Young and Alabama’s hands as much as possible.
You can also expect Alabama to try and establish the run here with Robinson healthy once again. While Mississippi isn’t exactly known for its defense, this is an athletic bunch that is improved from a season ago.
But the biggest thing here is the Saban revenge factor, which is crazy because they won last year, but the 48 points they allowed has probably eaten away at him.
He’s going to want his defense to respond, and they’ll get their chance. This scary defensive line should be able to get pressure against an Ole Miss o-line that has been a little suspect at times in pass protection. Mix in the Rebels' poor third down conversion rate, and scoring could be a little tougher this time around.
The number is just too big. Under all the way.
