Texas vs Oklahoma State picks and predictions for October 31

With QB Spencer Sanders hampered by injury, Chuba Hubbard carried the Oklahoma State Cowboys to victory last week. He will likely be leaned on heavily again this week against Texas.

Yeah, everyone knows I went to Texas, blah, blah, blah, even I’m bored with it. There’s nothing worse than knowing your favorite team isn’t going to win the conference but still reading things like, “The Horns will try to keep their Big 12 hopes alive this week!”

Thankfully, I have college football betting to add some extra intrigue, even when the outlook for the remainder of the season—at least for Texas—seems predetermined. That’s not the case in Stillwater, where undefeated Oklahoma State is riding high and tied atop the conference standings.

Here are our best college football free picks and predictions for Texas at No. 6 Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 4:00 ET at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday, October 31.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

Texas finally ended its two-game losing streak last Saturday with a ho-hum 27-16 victory over Baylor. Head coach Tom Herman is likely gone after this season, even if the Horns win out, but the Horns aren’t going to win out. Senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger deserves a better finish to his four-year career as a starter, and he continues to carry the Longhorns with 12 passing touchdowns, which leads the conference.

The Cowboys survived a battle with Iowa State last week, escaping with a narrow 24-21 home victory. Spencer Sanders returned at quarterback after recovering from an ankle injury and was serviceable, connecting on 20 of 29 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Fortunately, running back Chuba Hubbard is one of the best in the country and carried the rock 25 times for 139 yards and a score.

Yes, technically Texas is still in the conference race, but the Horns have covered the number just once this season. Herman often forces his team to run the football, putting them in third and long situations, and the Cowboys just happen to have the best third-down defense in the nation.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 3.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Longhorns defense is showing signs of improvement under defensive coordinator Chris Ash, so while they allow 32.2 points per game, that average is a touch misleading. The Cowboys counter with a defense that is Top 10 nationally, and the Under is 7-1 in Oklahoma State’s last eight.

PREDICTION: Under 58.5 (-110)

Team total pick

Texas has a Top-20 offense, but their impressive numbers were inflated against UTEP, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma, each of whom struggles to stop any team that has an offensive pulse. The Horns are going to have a much harder time against the Cowboys.

PREDICTION: Texas team total Under 26.5 (+115)
