Toledo vs Ohio picks and predictions

Our predictions are compiled from the analysis of the spread and total and are indications of where we are leaning for this game.
Our best bet is the play that we like the most for this game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll behind.

It was a disastrous start to the season for the Ohio Bobcats. They went 0-4 in non-conference play, which included a 28-26 loss to FCS Duquesne as 28.5-point favorites. But they have started to turn things around and come into this MAC matchup 3-3 in conference play, including two straight wins as outright underdogs.

Ohio is led by the best rushing attack in the MAC, averaging 228.7 yards per game. Running backs De'Montre Tuggle and Armani Rogers each average over six yards per carry and have combined for nearly 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns. Dual-threat quarterback Kurtis Rourke has also added 234 yards and three scores on the ground.

The problem is Ohio’s one-dimensional offense ranks dead last in the MAC in passing. The Bobcats go against a Rockets run defense that ranks 30th in the country allowing just 3.6 yards per attempt this season, which may force Ohio to rely too heavily on its passing attack.

Toledo is just 3-3 in MAC play this season, but that is a bit misleading as the three losses have come by a total of eight points.

The Rockets may not have the best offense, but it is balanced and ranks second in the MAC when it comes to yards per play. Dequan Finn has been outstanding since taking over under center for the Rockets, throwing for 1,263 yards with 10 touchdowns to just one pick over his last five games.

Finn is also a dual-threat QB with another 378 yards and eight scores on the ground while his top back, Bryant Koback, has nearly 1,000 yards and nine scores. They go against an Ohio defense ranked 110th in total yards and 101st in yards per play.

Toledo appears to have the edge almost everywhere, so while it may not be comfortable backing a MAC road favorite, it seems like the correct play in this case.

Prediction: Toledo -7 (-110)

Would it really be MAC-tion if we didn’t bet the Over? That is what everyone else is betting to this point, and it appears to be the better bet when it comes to the total even with the elevated number.

Toledo ranks fifth in the MAC in scoring, putting up 32.8 points per game against conference opponents, and the Rockets have put up 49 points in each of their last two games. And as noted they have a strong matchup against the Ohio defense that has allowed 30 points per game over their last five games.

And while Ohio’s overall numbers don’t look great, it averages 30.5 points and has put up 69 points over its last two games against decent defenses in Miami (OH) and Eastern Michigan.

Prediction: Over 57.5 (-110)

The unpredictability of MAC-tion makes us feel like the Toledo’s team total Over 30.5 is the best bet.

The Rockets have scored at least 34 points in each of their last three games, which includes putting up 34 points against Western Michigan, who has the No. 2 ranked defense in terms of total yards in the MAC. Toledo's balanced attack will make it difficult for the Ohio defense to slow the Rockets down. Expect them to take flight and surpass 30 points for the fourth straight game.

Pick: Toledo Team Total Over 30.5 (-120)
