Utah vs Oregon State predictions

Oregon State hasn’t earned a win over Utah since 2013, but things have changed quite a bit since then. Head coach Jonathan Smith has completely turned this program around, as he went 2-10 in his first year with the Beavers and now has a team that looks like it can go over .500 just four years later.

Under Smith, Oregon State is 5-3 straight up and 6-1 against the spread when coming off a game in which the team allowed 100 or fewer rushing yards. The Beavers are also 7-2-1 against the spread, in that time, when coming off a game in which they gave up 325 or more passing yards. With that in mind, look for Oregon State to do a better job of defending the pass in this one. And, it certainly doesn’t help that the Beavers are facing a Utes team that doesn’t exactly throw it all that well.

Quarterback Cameron Rising has done a good job of turning around Utah’s season, but the sophomore is coming off a game in which he threw two interceptions in a win over the Arizona State Sun Devils. If Rising ends up turning the ball over that many times against the Beavers, the Utes aren’t going to be able to recover from that. This Oregon State offense is far too explosive, and the Beavers are an extremely well-coached group. They’ll capitalize on any Utah mistakes and play to their strengths throughout this one.

It also hurts Rising that the Beavers are so good against the run. Oregon State is allowing only 104.7 rushing yards per game this year, which is a Top-20 mark in the country. If the Beavers can force Utah into long-yardage situations on third down, Rising is likely to fold and make a couple of bad decisions.

Offensively, there’s just nothing that the Utes will be able to do to stop this Beavers rushing game. Oregon State has rushed for at least 242 yards in each of its last five games and Utah isn’t going to be able to find any answers for that. The Beavers are still getting as many as 3.5 points on some books, but this team really should win this game outright.

Coming into this game, the Under has hit in three of Oregon State’s last four games. The Under has also hit in six of the last eight games played between Utah and Oregon State. The reality is that the Utes are a defensive-minded football team, and they wouldn’t let this thing turn into a track meet if it were up to them. And while Smith is an offensive-minded coach, Oregon State is a better defensive team than given credit for this year. The Beavers are good at stopping the run and can also control the clock with their dominant rushing attack.

It’s also worth noting that the Under has hit in all four games that Oregon State has played with a total between 56.5 and 63 points at home with Smith as coach.
