West Virginia vs Oklahoma predictions

When these teams met in 2019, the Sooners earned a 38-point victory over the Mountaineers as 32-point favorites. That marked the third time in a row that Oklahoma covered against West Virginia when playing in Norman, and the Sooners have a good shot at earning another decisive home victory on Saturday.

There’s no denying that Oklahoma has turned in a couple of mediocre performances this season, with the team being favored by a total of 53.5 points but beating the Tulane Green Wave and Nebraska Cornhuskers by a total of just 12. However, this matchup just happens to be a great one for the Sooners.

While Oklahoma struggled on defense against Tulane in the season opener, the team has allowed just 16 points over the last two weeks. And if the Sooners do have a weakness defensively, it’s in the secondary. Oklahoma gave up 296 passing yards against the Green Wave in the opener, and the team also gave up 289 yards through the air against Nebraska. The problem for West Virginia is that Jarret Doege isn’t exactly a great passer. On the season, the senior has completed just 61.3 percent of his passes, and he has also been intercepted three times. His erratic play is part of the reason that Mountaineers fans have been clamoring for backup Garrett Greene to get more opportunity.

West Virginia currently deploys Greene as a wildcat option, but an argument can be made that this team would be better with him as the full-time starter. Doege just doesn’t bring much to the table, and his lack of athleticism is a problem when considering that the Mountaineers have a miserable offensive line. Look for the Sooners to dial up the pressure often, as they’ll be confident that they won’t be putting their defensive backs in a bad position.

Leddie Brown is a great running back for this West Virginia team, but his play won’t be enough to keep the Mountaineers in this one. While Oklahoma definitely has some flaws on both sides of the ball, the team’s rushing defense isn’t one of them. The Sooners are giving up just 83.3 rushing yards per game this season, which is good for 21st in the nation.

Offensively, it’s only a matter of time before the Sooners wake up and start beating teams down. Oklahoma did rush for 194 yards and two scores against Nebraska last week, and the team got transfer running back Eric Gray involved. He had 15 rushes for 84 yards in that game, and he should be a serious weapon for this team as he gets more comfortable. As Oklahoma continues to run the ball better, there will be less and less pressure on Spencer Rattler.

Rattler took a few weeks to really get himself going last year, so look for the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite to snap out of it soon.

Last week, the Sooners played a game in which the two teams combined to score only 39 points despite the fact that the total was 63.0. This Oklahoma defense is better than it is given credit for, which is why it’s unlikely that West Virginia will have all that much success on offense. The Sooners are also figuring things out on the offensive side of the ball, and it won’t be all that easy for them to do so against a Mountaineers defense that is giving up 25.5 points per game through two games. West Virginia has also played in two games that went Under the total, and that trend likely won’t stop here.

Since Neal Brown took over as the head coach of the Mountaineers, the Under is 10-3-1 in the 14 games in which his West Virginia team has been an underdog. The Under has also hit in six of those eight contests that came on the road, with one of those being a push.
