Against the Spread (ATS) Pick
The Saints are coming off a terrific performance against the Bucs where they dominated on both sides of the ball, rolling up 420 yards of offense against Tampa Bay's highly ranked D while holding Brady & Co. to just 194 yards of their own.
New Orleans has now won five games in a row and gets to host a San Francisco side that is 2-4 SU and ATS over its last six contests.
The 49ers are coming off a terrific 2019 season, where they made it to the Super Bowl, but they've been hit hard by injuries this year. Their dominant defense from a year ago has been neutralized by an offseason trade of DeForest Buckner and long-term injuries to pass rushers Dee Ford and Nick Bosa.
The offense is also very banged up with quarterback Jimmy Garopollo and All-Pro tight end George Kittle joining several San Fran running backs and wide receivers on the sidelines.
The 49ers were absolutely stomped by the Packers last week, trailing 34-3 in the fourth quarter until they scored a pair of touchdowns in garbage time. Expect another long day for the Niners and take New Orleans on the opening line of 9.5 ASAP, before it inevitably grows.
PREDICTION: New Orleans -9.5 (-110)
Over/Under Pick
The 49ers looked solid on defense earlier in the season, but that was when they were facing some of the worst offenses in the league—and before injuries added up. They surrendered 37 points to Seattle two weeks ago and 34 points last week to Green Bay.
Now San Fran faces a balanced New Orleans attack that averages 30.5 points per game and finally has a healthy Michael Thomas back in the fold.
Thankfully for the Niners, backup QB Nick Mullens has actually been serviceable. He isn't going to steal the starting job anytime soon but it isn't like San Fran has to rely on Ben DiNucci under center.
Another factor to consider is that the Mercedes-Benz Superdome has a fast surface, which generally leads to higher-scoring games. The Saints defense might be third in the league in yards allowed this season but they allow 27.8 points per game at home.
Since 2017, the Saints allow 4.5 more ppg at home than they do on the road. With the Saints 7-1 to the Over this season, back the Over again.
PREDICTION: Over 49 (-110)
Player Prop Pick
At the age of 41, legendary Saints quarterback Drew Brees is still going strong. The player with the highest career completion percentage in NFL history is completing 74 percent of his passes this year. Plus Brees has at least 26 completions in six of his last seven games, averaging 27.6 completions per game over that span.
With their pass rush hindered by so many injuries, the 49ers pass defense has taken a big step back in 2020. San Francisco's defense currently ranks 15th in the league in opponent completion percentage (65.3 percent) and that number has jumped up to 72 percent over their last three games. Take the Over on Brees' completions.
PREDICTION: Drew Brees pass completions Over 24.5 (-120)
