Another NFL season brings in plenty of new sports bettors looking to get down action on their favorite teams for the first time. Those bettors will comb the NFL odds, cruise the injury reports, and dig into the analytics before making NFL picks, but they’ll often forget to look up.
Watching the weather is vital to getting the best of the bookmakers on Sundays, and you can be damn sure the “bad guys” know the forecast.
In order to level that playing field, I dissect the potential weather for every outdoor game on the board and highlight how the wind, rain, and more could impact the NFL Week 2 odds.
Here’s the NFL Week 2 weather report.
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins weather
Florida is a soup bowl in September and the forecast for Thursday Night Football is hot and sticky with possible rain threatening the start of this primetime game.
Temperatures are in the mid-80s with the humidex cranked all the way to 80%, making it feel like 105 degrees inside Hard Rock Stadium. With that high humidity comes the threat of thunderstorms.
As of Wednesday, the extended forecast calls for light to moderate rain in Miami Gardens in the afternoon, with those storms calming in time for the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff. However, as we saw in Kansas City last week, Mother Nature has a mind of her own this time of year.
Outside of potential slick conditions, the heat is an issue in terms of early-season conditioning. That’s even more impactful on a short week, with cramps and dehydration an issue in the second half.
The Dolphins’ depth chart is thin at running back with De'Von Achane and Raheem Mostert popping up on injury reports. If they sit, that leaves the Fins thin at the skill position and possibly running on fumes in the second half.
New York Jets at Tennessee Titans weather
It will be warm in Nashville this weekend. Not Miami warm, but warm enough with temperatures in the “feels like” range of 91 degrees due to high humidity at 80%.
That late-summer weather always comes with a chance of scattered thunderstorms, which could show up in the morning and continue throughout this 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
There will be a slight breeze on Sunday afternoon, with winds at 9 mph and gusts up to 21 mph blowing ESE from corner for corner at Nissan Stadium.
Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars weather
Sunshine State my ass. Storm season in Florida could rear its ugly head when the Jaguars host the Browns at 1 p.m. ET.
The extended forecast for Duval County calls for temperatures in the mid-80s mutating into “feels like” temps around 100 degrees Sunday afternoon, with the humidity at 75%.
That means more scattered thunderstorms before kickoff bringing potential rains to EverBank Stadium throughout the afternoon. Winds will blow ENE at 10 mph with gusts up to 24 mph moving end to end at EverBank Stadium.
Wet weather and sudden gusts can make kicking and fielding kicks tricky, as well as impact any deeper passing plays. Jacksonville’s new-look offense brought in deep-ball threats, and Trevor Lawrence was fourth in intended air yards and had the fifth-deepest average depth of target in Week 1.
Forecasts can quickly change at this time of the year, so keep an eye on this one as the week goes on. The current total for Browns-Jaguars is at 41.5 O/U, down from an opener of 42.5 points.
Los Angeles Chargers at Carolina Panthers weather
Could the weather in Carolina match the cloudy future of its NFL franchise? According to extended forecasts for Charlotte, yep.
Possible showers for this 1 p.m. ET start along with winds blowing at 12 mph ENE with gusts up to 27 mph from sideline-to-sideline.
It’s far from California weather for this early wake-up call for the Chargers (10 a.m. PT) but if Week 1 was any indication of how Jim Harbaugh is doing business, wind won’t matter to this run-heavy playbook and quick-hitting passing attack.
As for Carolina, it might want to hope that a bolt of lightning comes from the clouds and strikes Bryce Young, giving the second-year QB super powers… because that’s the only way he’s getting any better.
New York Giants at Washington Commanders weather
Keep in eye on the anemometer in Landover this weekend. That’s that twirly thing that measures wind speed.
The extended forecast for Sunday calls for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 80s, but winds could play a role in this NFC East affair.
Winds are expected to blow ENE at 10 mph but gusts could get up to 21 mph, moving from corner-to-corner at FedExField.
The total for Giants-Commanders is one of the biggest moves on the Week 2 board, jumping from 41 to 44 points at some books.
Las Vegas Raiders at Baltimore Ravens weather
Staying in Maryland, a similar forecast is in store for the Ravens’ home opener. It will be solid football weather with the threat of stronger gusts at 1 p.m. ET.
According to multiple projections, winds will blow at 10 mph with gusts of 20-plus moving East from corner-to-corner at M&T Bank Stadium.
Baltimore’s running game will be unfazed by wind but with this spread flirting with 10 points (after moving from -8), the Raiders will likely be playing from behind and throwing more often. This is just the team’s second outdoor game in its last seven outings going back to Week 12 of last season.
Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles weather
Week 2 closes out in the City of Brotherly Love. Monday night’s forecast calls for clouds and temperatures dipping into the 70s, but there could be some wayward breezes in store for Lincoln Financial Field.
Winds blow East at 10 mph with potential gusts flirting with 20 mph early into the 8:15 p.m. ET primetime kickoff. However, that wind will calm as the game plays out and weather won’t play a big factor between the Falcons and Eagles.
