Canucks vs Kings Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Quinn Hughes hasn't been registering shots on goal at the same volume as earlier in the season, but it's not for lack of trying. Only 17.8% of his attempts have been on target in his last six games, which is unsustainably low.

The Vancouver Canucks are looking to rebound from a tough loss by topping the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Arena on Thursday, January 16.

Vancouver star Quinn Hughes headlines my top Kings vs. Canucks predictions, and these NHL picks expect him to put plenty of pucks on net against Los Angeles tonight.

My Canucks analysis

Let’s tuck the elephants in the room into bed off the top.

Vancouver Canucks star Quinn Hughes has been held to two shots or fewer in six consecutive games, and the Los Angeles Kings allow the fewest shots per game and second-fewest to opposing defensemen.

Still, I’m betting Hughes to have 3+ shots because he has been screaming statistical correction after registering just eight shots on 45 attempts during the six-game lull.

It’s incredibly difficult to convert only 17.8% of attempts into shots, and for comparison, Hughes was at a 40.6% ratio through his first 33 games of the year.

The reigning Norris Trophy winner has also shown off an uptick in shot volume this season (7.07 compared to 5.9 last year), and he paces the Canucks in attempts per 60 (18.95) and 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage (58.3%).

Add Hughes hanging in the 97th percentile of defensemen in both shots on goal and offensive zone time at even strength to him logging 25:15 of ice time per game, and the star blueliner will cash in on the pending statistical correction tonight.

Canucks vs Kings odds analysis

There has been action on the Vancouver side of this moneyline at Pinnacle, with the Canucks opening at +102 and moving to -113 as of Thursday afternoon. It’s definitely a little surprising considering Vancouver is 2-4-3 out of the holiday break.

The Under 5.5 odds (-136) at Pinnacle have an implied probability of 57.6%, and Los Angeles has a 13-25-3 Over/Under record this season. Vancouver has also gone Under the number in five of its past eight games.
