The Winnipeg Jets continue their quest for a Presidents’ Trophy with a home date against the struggling Buffalo Sabres.

My Sabres vs. Jets predictions expect the home side to take care of business, with No. 1 center Mark Scheifele making plenty of noise offensively.

Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for March 23.

Jets vs Sabres prediction

My Jets pick: Mark Scheifele anytime goal (+161 at Pinnacle)

My Jets analysis
Mark Scheifele is having one of the best finishing seasons of his career, piling up 35 goals through 70 games thus far. That puts him on pace to reach the 40-goal plateau for the second time in his career.

He has scored efficiently all season long, particularly when playing on home soil. Scheifele has goals in exactly 50% of his home games — a remarkable rate.

Scheifele is currently in the worst finishing drought of the season. He has failed to score in seven straight games, marking just his second dry spell of more than four games all year.

Luckily, he finds himself in a great spot to get back on track. The Buffalo Sabres have allowed 3.53 goals per game this season, ranking them 29th in goal suppression.

They give up a lot of chances and simply don’t have the goaltending to mask the mistakes in front of them. That should be even more evident on Sunday afternoon.

Starting goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen started Saturday, meaning backup James Reimer is likely to get the crease this time around.

Reimer has won just two of 12 decisions this season and owns a .895 save percentage. He is well past the peak of his powers and not nearly as capable of allowing his teams to hang around in games they don’t belong in.

The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a couple of rest days while the Sabres are in the latter half of a back-to-back and playing their fourth consecutive road game.

Look for Scheifele and the big guns to take advantage of this scheduling advantage and really flex their muscles offensively.

Jets vs Sabres odds analysis

The Jets opened as -295 favorites and have seen the line shift even further in their direction, clearing the -300 mark along the way. They are a much better team across the board, have home ice, and a rest advantage so it makes sense the line continues to move.

We have seen a little movement towards the Over with it now trading at even money. The Sabres tend to play in high-event games while the Jets are one of the best offensive teams in the NHL facing one of the worst defensive teams. There’s certainly potential for them to put up a big number and do a lot of heavy lifting on the scoreboard.
