The Edmonton Oilers will continue their quest to earn home ice in the opening round of the playoffs without star centers Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
My Oilers vs. Kraken predictions see a few players taking advantage of the extra opportunity on their plate, with Zach Hyman being front and center.
Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for March 27.
Oilers vs Kraken prediction
My Oilers pick: Zach Hyman Over 2.5 shots (-140 at BET99)
My Oilers analysis
Zach Hyman is always a big piece of the Edmonton Oilers' offense, but even more falls on his plate without superstars Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid in the lineup.
He's generated much higher shot volume without the two of them, piling up 13 shots on 23 attempts over the last three games. That equates to incredible outputs of 4.3 shots on 7.6 attempts per game.
The matchup is tremendous as Hyman looks to build on his shooting success. The Seattle Kraken have played at a very high pace lately, ranking sixth in 5-on-5 events over the last 10 games.
They sit 18th in shot share and 26th in shot suppression during that span, so there is certainly reason to believe Edmonton can generate a healthy number of shots.
Plenty should come off the stick of Hyman, who is suddenly the team’s go-to player. Beyond playing a more featured role against a team giving up shots in bulk, Hyman also finds himself in an elite positional matchup.
The Kraken have conceded more shots per game to wingers than any other team over the last 10 games. Yes, even bottom-feeders like the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks.
Notable shooting wingers like Alex Ovechkin, Filip Forsberg, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Owen Tippett recently cleared their shot totals against the Kraken with room to spare.
There’s a good chance Hyman will add his name to the list tonight.
Oilers vs Kraken same-game parlay (SGP)
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is another player who greatly benefits from the absences of McDavid and Draisaitl — at least when it comes to shooting the puck. He's recorded at least three shots on goal in each game without the pair of superstars, combining to record 11 in aggregate.
That’s a pretty healthy output considering two of the three games came against Western Conference powerhouses in the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars.
It just so happens RNH’s best performance of the bunch — an eight attempt, five shot, three-point night — came against the Kraken.
Rounding out a trifecta of Oilers parlay is Evan Bouchard. The star offensive defenseman has points in 56% of his games this season and is playing some of his best hockey, having hit the scoresheet in eight of his last 10 games.
The Kraken are playing poorly defensively, and there’s a real chance this is a Philipp Grubauer start, which would raise the floor and ceiling for Edmonton’s offense.
