Oilers vs Red Wings Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

It's been tough sledding for Edmonton's biggest goal-scoring threats, but that could change tonight against the bad Red Wings defense.

The Edmonton Oilers started the season with three straight regulation defeats. They’ve turned things around in a hurry, going 3-1-1 over their last five to get within a game of .500.

My Oilers vs. Red Wings predictions see the good times continuing, with Edmonton’s top line taking advantage of a vulnerable Detroit defense en route to another victory. Let’s take a closer look at my October 27 NHL picks.

Oilers vs Red Wings prediction

My Oilers pick
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 assists (+110 at BET99)

My Oilers analysis
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins couldn’t ask for better playing circumstances to record an assist. He’s skating on the top line at 5-on-5 with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman, one of the league’s best offensive duos.

McDavid (4.4 expected goals) and Hyman (4.9 expected goals) are piling up quality looks on a nightly basis, but the puck just hasn’t gone in.

The NHL’s best player has scored three times on 4.4 xG, while Hyman has yet to find the back of the net altogether. Nearly 9.5 xG worth of chances has turned into only three goals. Suffice it to say, they’re finishing at unsustainably low rates — especially given their talent levels.

The floodgates will open sooner rather than later if the opportunities continue to be there. They certainly should be against the Detroit Red Wings.

Detroit’s team defense has been horrific in the early going. It ranks 30th in shot suppression at 5-on-5 and dead last in shot share, meaning the Red Wings are giving up a lot more than they’re generating.

Their porous 5-on-5 defense has translated to penalty-killing situations as well. The Red Wings rank Bottom 3 in preventing shots, expected goals, and goals while undermanned.

Edmonton has a historically good power play featuring McDavid, Hyman, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Nugent-Hopkins. The first four are among the best goal scorers in the NHL at their respective positions, so there are a lot of dangerous targets for Nugent-Hopkins to feed pucks to.

With Nugent-Hopkins surrounded by elite players poised to break out offensively and a steady dose of minutes coming against a dreadful defensive side, I love his chances of picking up an assist in this game.

Oilers vs Red Wings same-game parlay (SGP)

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 assists

Zach Hyman anytime goalscorer

Oilers moneyline

Hyman sits tied for ninth in the NHL with 4.9 expected goals generated. Every single player in front of Hyman has found the back of the net at least three times, with seven of them piling up four or more.

He's consistently creating chances and there’s no reason to expect that to change riding shotgun with passers like McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins at 5-on-5 and on the power play. Given the correlation with Nugent-Hopkins, there’s a decent chance any assist produced comes by way of a Hyman goal.

Edmonton is simply a much better team than Detroit. The Oilers have a +82 scoring chance differential through eight games, while the Red Wings have a net of -78 over the same sample size.

The Oilers can look forward to a healthy edge in opportunities. With much better players taking them, the Oilers are well-positioned to get another win.
