Oilers vs Stars Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: McDavid is Inevitable

Connor McDavid has been the hottest player in hockey after a slow start (for him) to the season. While the Dallas Stars present a difficult opponent, McDavid hasn't had trouble against the league's elite. See how that affects our NHL picks today.

Latest NHL Picks

The Dallas Stars skate into Saturday on a three-game winning streak and seven victories in their last eight games and will look to keep rolling against the Edmonton Oilers at American Airlines Center.

Both clubs have been putting plenty of pucks in the net, which means we could be in for a high-scoring battle, while Connor McDavid has been on fire with 12 points in his last four games. How will this affect our NHL picks this afternoon?

Keep reading for my breakdown of the NHL odds for the Oilers vs. Stars on Saturday, February 17.

Oilers vs Stars odds

Oilers vs Stars predictions

The Edmonton Oilers suffered a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Blues on Thursday but Connor McDavid was all over the scoresheet once again, collecting an assist on each of his team’s goals.

McDavid has been on fire since returning from the All-Star break, notching 13 points in five games — including nine points over his last two outings alone. I’ll look for the Oilers captain to continue his hot streak by cashing the Over on 1.5 points against the Dallas Stars this afternoon.

McDavid has collected at least two points in five of his last seven games and leads the NHL with a whopping 20 points over that span — seven more than any other skater.

While Dallas’ defense has been stout, allowing just two goals in each of its past three games, Edmonton is one of the few teams that has the firepower to break it down — thanks in large part to McDavid, of course.

The Oilers have averaged 3.55 GPG over the past month, tied for seventh-best in the NHL, while McDavid has factored on 23 of his team’s 39 tallies through that span — just under 60%.

Edmonton has also been producing chances at a very impressive rate since the break, ranking second in high-danger chances per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 (17.23) and fifth in expected goals for per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 (3.11) per Natural Stat Trick.

If the Oilers keep pushing the pace offensively, McDavid will factor on at least two goals this afternoon.

My best bet: Connor McDavid Over 1.5 points (+100 at SIA)

Oilers vs Stars same-game parlay

Zach Hyman anytime goal

Stars moneyline

Over 6.5

McDavid’s multi-point prop is not available for the same-game parlay, so I’ll switch my attention to teammate Zach Hyman, and look for him to find the back of the net. Hyman leads Edmonton with 32 goals in 49 games and has scored in six of his last 10 appearances.

I’ll also look for the Stars to keep rolling by picking up the win, while both teams combine to cash the Over on 6.5 total goals.

Dallas is 7-1-0 since January 23 and leads the NHL with 14 points over that span while outscoring the opposition by an average tally of 4.50-2.88.

The Stars have scored at least four goals in six of their last eight contests while the Oilers have put up at least three tallies in nine of their last 11 outings, so there should be plenty of scoring to go around.

Oilers vs Stars moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Oilers and Stars opened at nearly identical numbers on the moneyline, with Edmonton coming in at -104 and Dallas getting -108 on home ice. By Friday night, plenty of books had the visitors as the underdog at around +100, but the Stars have been too good to deny, which is why they’re my moneyline pick today.

When you think of high-flying offense, you think of Edmonton before Dallas but those roles have been reversed of late as the Stars are leading the NHL with 4.05 GPG since the calendar flipped to 2024.

Rather than one or two standout stars, Dallas has received offense by committee as Matt Duchene leads the charge with 21 points in his last 19 games since January 1 while three others have tallied at least a point per game over that span.

The Stars should also have the edge in goal as likely starter Jake Oettinger owns an impressive .944 SV% and 1.91 GAA in February while Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner has struggled with an .880 SV% and 3.57 GAA over that span.

The total was set at 6.5 goals for today’s contest and the Over looks like an easy play in a battle between two of the league’s better offensive clubs.

With Dallas coming into this contest as the highest-scoring team in 2024, it should rack up plenty of goals against Skinner, who’s given up 12 through his last three starts.

At the other end of the rink, McDavid has nine points in his last two games — including a six-assist effort against the Red Wings on Tuesday — and he could easily power the Oilers to three or four goals on his own.
