Panthers vs Kings Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Panthers and Kings might just be the two best defensive teams in the NHL, and for tonight's matchup, that means goals will be hard to come by.

It’s going to be a low-scoring showdown at Crypto.com Arena, with the Los Angeles Kings hosting the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, January 22.

Los Angeles has been a defensive juggernaut on home ice, and Florida is playing the second leg of a back-to-back road set. Here are my Panthers vs. Kings predictions and top NHL picks for tonight's bout.

Panthers vs Kings prediction

My best bet
Under 5.5 (-110 at Pinnacle)

My analysis
The Los Angeles Kings and Florida Panthers respectively rank first and second in expected goals against per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, and L.A. has been particularly stingy on home ice with a league-low 2.11 goals against per game.

Florida has also generated the 23rd-most expected goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 (2.3) on the highway, so ranking third in goals per road game (3.46) is tied to an unsustainably high 29.5 power-play percentage.

With Los Angeles boasting a seventh-ranked 82.6 penalty-kill percentage, the statistical correction is set to kick in for the Florida PP.

Additionally, Kings No. 1 Darcy Kuemper sports an elite .925 SV% and 1.98 GAA at Crypto.com Arena. In the opposite crease, Cats backup Spencer Knight has posted a .920 SV% and 1.95 GAA across his past three road starts and sports respectable .905 and 2.45 overall marks for the year.

Finally, both teams have long-standing trends to the Under. Florida has an active 5-9-1 Over/Under record, and Los Angeles is 16-25-3 for the year.

Panthers vs Kings same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 5.5

Sam Reinhart 1+ point

Matthew Tkachuk 1+ point

The Panthers have loaded up their No. 1 line with wingers Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart flanking center Aleksander Barkov, and the trio have been dominant in recent years. They’ve been on the ice for 6.51 goals per 60 minutes with a 75.4 Corsi For percentage at even strength over the past three seasons, and the trio jumps to 9.2 goals per 60 when including their shared power-play time.

There’s also a notable edge available through the +575 DraftKings price because FanDuel has this same-game parlay listed at just +465. The difference in the NHL odds attaches a positive expected value of 19% to the DraftKings number.
