2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship Picks & Live Odds: Tracking the Action at TPC Southwind

Playoff golf is here with the first of three FedEx Cup Playoff events going down in Memphis this week. Looking to make the first move with a win and 2,000 points, Scheffler, Rahm, and Rory sit well above the rest of the field with better than 10/1 odds.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway this week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

After a couple of weeks of rest, the top stars are back in action and it's no surprise to see World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler leading the way. He last won at THE PLAYERS back in March but went on a run of five straight Top 5s this summer and sits second in the FedEx Cup Standings behind Jon Rahm.

We break down the favorites and more in our full FedEx St. Jude Championship betting preview below, including live golf odds and free golf picks

FedEx St. Jude Championship picks and predictions

Sam Burns over Cameron Young (+110)

Both Sam Burns and Cam Young have fallen victim to not quite meeting expectations in 2023 after strong campaigns a season ago. With that said, Burns has a win to his name and has been a much better bet over the last few months.

His win at the Match Play back in March comes as part of a run of eight Top 20s in 14 starts and that includes two of the last three entering the week (T14 at Wyndham, T19 at Scottish). And while that stretch also includes three missed cuts, that pales in comparison to Young’s struggles through the spring and summer months.

Young finished better than T51 just once in seven events between the Masters and John Deere (T32 U.S. Open) and while back-to-back Top 10s seemed to put that slump behind him, he missed the cut at the 3M Open and lost 2.98 strokes on approach in two rounds last time out.

Throw in the fact Burns also has the edge in course history with T20 and T2 finishes here at TPC Southwind (Young T31 last season) and it’s hard to explain his +110 odds in this matchup. Take advantage of it while you can.

Pick: Sam Burns over Cameron Young (+110 at Caesars)

J.T. Poston Top 30 (-120)

There’s really not much else I love this week, so why not bail out and roll with a guy who won us money last week?

Currently on a heater of four Top-7 finishes in five starts, Poston has moved up the FedEx Cup Standings (currently 45th) but needs a couple of more good weeks if he wants to play at East Lake. I think he’s up to the task.

He ranks 12th in total strokes gained over the last month, per DataGolf, and when you combine that with an iron game that’s gained more than 10 shots in his last two starts and a red-hot putter, it’s no surprise he’s been able to produce these types of results.

His resume at TPC Southwind may not be vast but T20 and T30 finishes in two tries is more than enough for me to comfortably expect another quality result. This field will be considerably stronger than in recent weeks, but I suspect the great play will continue.

Pick: J.T. Poston Top 30 (-120 at DraftKings)

FedEx St. Jude Championship field and favorites

The 2022-23 PGA Tour season has been about three golfers: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm. They've been the three best golfers this season and they rightfully make up the Top 3 spots on the odds boards as they begin their playoff runs this week.

As mentioned at the onset, that starts with Scheffler (+700). His T23 finish at Hoylake was his worst result going all the way back to the CJ Cup in October (19 straight Top 12s) and he's looking to get revenge after throwing away last year's FedEx Cup.

But while Scottie has been the most consistent golfer this season, he's actually second in the FedEx Cup Standings thanks to Jon Rahm and the four victories he claimed early in the season. Rahm finished runner-up at Royal Liverpool in his last start.

Then there's three-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy, who enters the week in incredible form and third on the points list. He's racked up seven straight Top-10 finishes, including a win at the Scottish Open and an infamous runner-up at the U.S. Open.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele round out the Top 5 at +1,600 and +1,800, respectively, with Viktor Hovland the only other guy sitting inside 20/1 odds.

Max Homa sits fourth in the FedEx Cup Standings behind the Big 3 but is actually 15th on this week's odds board thanks to some so-so play in the second half of the season.

U.S. Open winner Wyndham Clark sits fifth on the points list but just 17th on the odds board, same with Brian Harman who is sixth and 20th, respectively. That trend ends with Hovland, however, who is seventh in points and sixth on the board this week.
