Presidents Cup Odds: Team USA Looks to Continue Dominance

The United States have dominated the Presidents Cup since the inaugural event in 1994 with an 11-1-1 record in 13 showdowns. The 2022 edition doesn't appear poised to be any different with the American side heavy favorites heading into the event.

For the first time since 2019, the Presidents Cup will be held from Thursday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 25.

The four-day, match play event will consist of 30 total matches between the two teams. Each team consists of 12 golfers.

With Davis Love III installed as captain, Team USA is entering this edition as the definitive favorite. Still, the International team has some great players on its roster even after some roadblocks for captain Trevor Immelman.

Here are the early odds for the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Notes on the field

The teams have been finalized. Here is a look at both rosters.

Team USA International Team
Patrick Cantlay Hideki Matsuyama
Sam Burns Sungjae Im
Justin Thomas Tom Kim
Scottie Scheffler Corey Conners
Xander Schauffele Mito Pereira
Tony Finau Adam Scott
Cameron Young Taylor Pendrith
Billy Horschel Sebastian Munoz
Collin Morikawa Si Woo Kim
Kevin Kisner Cam Davis
Jordan Spieth Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Max Homa K.H. Lee

The United States were dealt a bit of a curveball after Will Zalatoris was unable to play due to a back injury. However, the International team is missing a trio of players — Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, and Anirban Lahiri — who were deemed ineligible after joining LIV Golf.

Team USA won 16-14 in 2019, but will not bring back Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, or Bryson DeChambeau, all of whom are now on the LIV Golf tour.

Team USA (-700)

The United States are considered the betting favorites entering the event by a substantial margin and it's not exactly a surprise. The roster boasts five players currently listed in the OWGR Top 10 in Scheffler, Cantlay, Schauffele, Thomas, and Morikawa. It would have been six had Zalatoris been healthy enough to play.

The team's lowest-ranked golfer, Kevin Kisner, is ranked 26th in the world, higher than six of the 10 players on the International roster.

On paper, the USA holds a distinct advantage. Scheffler and Thomas each won major championships in 2022 and no one from the Internationals can say the same.

Internationals (+700)

Despite being significant underdogs, the International team is hardly anonymous. Matsuyama and Scott are both former Masters champions and the rest of the team has performed well on the PGA Tour.

Still, the teams appear very uneven. Losing the reigning Open Championship winner in Cam Smith only exacerbates the divide. If anything, the odds gap should maybe be even larger than it is entering play considering Team USA's pedigree. That's not to disparage the Internationals, but to indicate how the star power is more apparent on the other side.

History was already not on the International team's side, having only won once (1998) since the inception of the event in 1994.
