Copa America 2024 has come and gone, and though a player from Argentina won the Golden Boot, it's probably not the player you were thinking about going into the tournament.

In addition to traditional side and total betting markets, the Copa America top goal scorer odds are a very popular market for the tournament. Otherwise known as the Golden Boot award, this market — a personal favorite — stands out above all the other Copa America 2024 odds.

Lautaro Martinez quickly separated himself from the pack and was a colossal favorite going into the Final, where he iced Argentina's second consecutive championship with his fifth goal of the tournament.

Top goal scorer market explained

The Copa America 2024 top goal scorer market is a futures market where you're simply betting on which player will win the Golden Boot award by leading the tournament in goals scored. All matches played in the tournament count towards a player's goal total. Goals scored in penalty shootouts do not.

What happens if it's a tie?

If two or more players are tied for the goal-scoring lead at the end of the tournament, the market will result in a dead heat. This means the amount you were set to win will be divided by the number of players who tie for the lead.

For example, let's say you have a ticket that pays out $500 for Vinicius Junior to be the top goal scorer. If he finishes tied with one other player, that bet would now pay $250 ($500 / 2). If he finishes tied with two other players, the bet would pay out $166.66 ($500 / 3).

How to read top goal scorer odds

The above odds for top goal scorer are in American format. All odds with a positive sign (+) indicate the amount you will win for every $100 wagered. For example, a $100 bet on Vinicius Junior at +400 would profit $400. And a $100 bet on Endrick at +1,700 would profit $1,700.

As the tournament progresses, you might see a favorite emerge with negative (-) odds. This means that you would need to wager the amount of the odds to win $100. So if Lionel Messi drops to -130 later in the tournament, you'd need to wager $130 to win $100.
