Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton Picks and Predictions: Bursting Out of the Gates

Though Wolves have escaped the relegation zone — for now — conquering Crystal Palace may be a tall task with their best chance at any points coming from a potential draw. Nevertheless, Palace has been starting hot and should get another first-half goal.

Two sides will seek an elusive third win of the season when Crystal Palace welcomes the struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers to Selhurst Park on Tuesday.

Wolves are coming off just their second victory of the campaign, raising them out of the relegation zone at a time when they’re still seeking a new permanent manager. Meanwhile, Palace look to return to the top half of the table by claiming all three points after a frustrating draw at Leicester.

Can the home side secure a crucial win, or will Wolves pull them into the relegation fight? We break down the match in our Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton picks and predictions for Tuesday, October 18.

Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton picks and predictions

Patrick Vieira was likely happy to get a point against a Leicester City side that dominated the scoring chances on Saturday but unhappy with how his side performed. Leicester outshot Palace 14-8, but the Eagles put just one shot on frame and were fortunate not to concede. Palace has allowed more touches in their penalty area than any club in the Premier League, a big reason why the clean sheet was just the second the side has recorded all season.

Wolves are thrilled to have clawed out of the relegation zone, with the 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday giving the side some breathing room. A handball led to the only goal in the match, with Ruben Neves converting in an open affair that saw the two sides miss multiple chances. Wolves have not scored a goal from open play in their last four and have put just 23.9% of their shots on goal, which is the lowest mark in the Premier League.

While there are reports of a potential return of former manager Nuno Espirito Santo nearly a year and a half after his departure, the club is woefully undermanned and in need of help at the front. Injuries to Raul Jimenez and Pedro Neto have left Wolves bare at the front, and the emergency signing of Diego Costa has yet to provide any return.

Star man Wilfried Zaha was hauled off with 13 minutes left in Palace’s match on Saturday. Zaha was the lowest-rated player on the pitch, and he’s seen his goalless streak run to four matches. Striker Odsonne Edouard scored a goal in the previous two matches and will be happy to face a Wolves side that continues to struggle at the back.

Only five clubs have allowed more touches inside the penalty area than Wolves, but the side has been bailed out by teams not putting efforts on goal. That won’t be the case on Tuesday, as Palace has the second-highest shots-on-goal percentage in the league.

Wolves have conceded before the break in each of its last two away fixtures, and in three of five on the campaign. This sets up perfectly for the hosts, who have found the back of the net in three of their last four matches at Selhurst Park before the halftime interval — with three of those coming inside the opening half-hour. Back Palace to continue that form with Zaha & Co. taking advantage of a woeful Wolves side that continues to struggle away from home.

Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton side analysis

Crystal Palace is rightly favored but the line has moved a bit more toward the draw over the past week. Palace is still providing a positive odds play with the line at +120 at most books on the three-way market. However, taking Palace in a draw-no-bet scenario will heavily increase the juice, laying nearly two to one.

Crystal Palace has kept a clean sheet in each of the last three meetings with Wolves, winning each time. This season has seen the side win twice at home while losing two as well — but the two defeats came to Arsenal and Chelsea.

Wolves have taken just one point of a possible 15 on the road, having lost four of five thus far in the campaign. The side has scored just one goal and none in the last four away from home.

Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton Over/Under analysis

The last nine meetings between Palace and Wolves have all been low-scoring affairs with fewer than three goals scored in each, and this one is setting up to follow that trend. That’s probably why there is quite a bit of juice on the Under. After opening at around -125 last weekend, the Under has been heavily bet down to anywhere between -150 and -160 across the board.

Wolves have not scored a goal from open play in their four matches since the suspension of play for Queen Elizabeth’s passing, with their only goal in that span coming via penalty on Saturday. Away from home, they haven't scored since the opening match, while keeping just one clean sheet and conceding multiple goals in each of their last two.

Palace have failed to score at home just once this season, falling 2-0 in its opener to Arsenal. The side has seen at least two goals scored in all five matches at home this season, with three or more being scored in three of the last four. Palace have yet to keep a clean sheet at home this season.
