England vs Switzerland picks, predictions, and betting tips

My best bet:

My analysis

In the boxing world, they say styles make fights and England vs. Switzerland has the potential to be a great 90 minutes of football.

England are the betting favorite but Switzerland have been the better of the two teams through four games at Euro 2024. They finished second in Group A behind Germany but performed brilliantly in a win over Hungary and were unlucky to only leave their game against the hosts with a point. A 2-0 win over the Italians in the Round of 16 was impressive but we have to consider that it was arguably the worst Italian team to reach a tournament in generations.

Meanwhile, the English have stunk up the Euros so far.

They won Group C with some workmanlike performances that were hard to watch and a surprise given the quality of players at Gareth Southgate’s disposal. They were 1-0 down to Slovakia in added time in the Round of 16 when heroics from Jude Bellingham drew them level before Harry Kane scored the winning goal at the start of extra time. That game could be pivotal to England’s Euro 2024 hopes and is the reason why they’ll beat Switzerland on Saturday.

Firstly, we need to talk about what that win did for the team. They’ve been struggling to get going throughout the tournament but, just as the England fans are singing, “You can’t start a fire without a spark.” That win was the spark that has confidence oozing back into the team and has given them a sense of purpose. It’s also a reminder of their quality and that they can’t be ruled out against opposition.

Secondly, and most importantly, the win over Slovakia saw Marc Guehi get suspended. It’s unfortunate in many ways with the Crystal Palace defender having had a great tournament so far, however, it appears to be forcing England to change shape. Likewise, it seems like makeshift left back Kieran Trippier might not recover from the injury picked up in that game. The media have reported that England will switch to three at the back, a formation that has served them well in the past.

With Kyle Walker moving to CB it’ll mean Trent Alexander-Arnold playing RWB with Bukayo Saka on the left. That instantly adds more threat from wide positions, something which has been the biggest issue for England so far, it also should help the team cope with the loss of Guehi. It should also allow both Bellingham and Phil Foden to operate more centrally, without unbalancing the team.

England’s new formation, if reports are true, and so far this tournament they have been, should help unlock their potential, which is a scary proposition for their opponents and why the Three Lions will sweep Switzerland to one side on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham odds, prop for today

My best bet
To be booked (+170 at Betano)

My analysis

That bicycle kick to level the scores in added time against Slovakia was another famous moment in the young career of Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid star is just 21 years old but he’s already built a collection of famous moments, although this might be his best so far.

There’s a temptation to back Bellingham to add to his two tournament goals but instead, we’ll back him to get booked. He’s picked up just one yellow card in Germany so far but in many ways he’s been lucky. He’s averaged a foul committed per game but it could have been more. He’s diving into tackles, often going off his feet which only increases the chances of a mistimed challenge. He’s also been very vocal, to opposition players and to the referees, which may yet see him get booked. At odds of +170 in a hugely important game, it feels like a smart play.

England vs Switzerland same-game parlay (SGP)

England moneyline

Trent Alexander-Arnold 1+ assist

Harry Kane anytime goal

In addition to backing England to win, we’re also adding two player props. Firstly we’ll be taking Trent Alexander-Arnold to get an assist. He’s an incredible passer of the ball, part of the reason why Southgate tried to fit him into the England midfield in the two opening games. He’s looked dangerous when coming on and should he start in the RWB role it’ll mean he’ll be getting into advanced positions and looking to set up Harry Kane and his teammates.

Finally, we’ll also be backing Kane to score. The Bayern Munich man hasn’t been at his best at Euro 2024 but he’s still scored two goals and Slovakia saw his best performance to date, showing signs that he’s managing to shake off the injury that he came into the tournament with. With England’s formation change, it should allow more width, something that should in turn help Kane receive the ball in dangerous positions and score.
