Germany vs Hungary predictions
Moneyline pick
Any skeptics toward Germany's legitimacy in this year's Euros, after a middling performance against France in their opener, got a pretty definitive answer against Portugal on Saturday. The 2014 World Cup champions tore Portugal apart, with the defending Euro champ's tactical setup immediately proven to be a mistake. From there, it was a quicksand game, as Germany led attack after attack, consistently putting the ball in dangerous positions (with two own goals to prove it).
Robin Gosens had all the freedom in the world down the left against a helpless Nelson Semedo, with his wingback counterpart, Joshua Kimmich, delivering a similarly effective performance from the right. With Gosens and Kimmich providing Germany's width, they were able to flood the penalty area in attack and wreaked absolute havoc on a deep Portuguese line.
While Hungary must be thrilled with what was a famous point against the defending World Cup champions on home turf, they're going to face real danger in this one. Like Portugal, Hungary set up deep with a low block and invite pressure, with their hopes of attack coming via counters.
Even in an exceptionally strong defensive performance against France, Hungary and right-wingback Loic Nego were exploited a few times by Kylian Mbappe. While that's not an unreasonable occurrence in itself, it doesn't bode well against a German team that has built their best attacks down the left.
Hungary may put on another admirable fight in the Group of Death, but the magic of matchday two won't repeat. Germany will deliver successive wins in front of their home support.
PREDICTION: Germany (-600)
Goalscorer pick
Kai Havertz was the one most responsible for Portugal's calamitous defending against Germany, as his movement off the ball was absolutely phenomenal. In many respects, it was reminiscent of German teammate Thomas Muller's best moments as a "Raumdeuter," with Havertz popping into space at just the perfect time without warning.
With Muller sidelined in this one, Havertz will have even more of the attacking responsibility but with it, extra space to navigate in the middle of the pitch. With Kimmich and Gosens given the flanks to operate from, Havertz's partners in attack, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry, will play more centrally. As it did against Portugal, that will aid Havertz's attempts to find pockets of space, with center-backs occupied by a pair of dynamic attackers on either side of Havertz.
As Muller has done so well for years, expect Havertz to interpret space perfectly and capitalize when he is given the chance.
PREDICTION: Anytime goalscorer - Kai Havertz (+100)
