After their surprise win over Belgium on Monday, Slovakia looks solid enough to resist a confused Ukrainian side.
Serhiy Rebrov and his boys seem to have problems that go beyond the 3-0 defeat to Romania. Their pre-tournament form has been oscillating. Left out of the Euro 2024 qualified pack in the preliminary round, Ukraine only traveled to Germany thanks to the Nations League playoffs path. They suffered both against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland, trailing by one goal in each match and eventually winning 2-1. They played three friendlies in June, where a 0-0 draw vs. Germany was followed by a 3-1 defeat to Poland and a 4-0 win over minnows Moldova.
The 3-0 disastrous defeat to Romania in Ukraine's Euro 2024 opener powered doubts inside the team and affected moods in the dressing room. A mood which is rather different for the Slovakians right now.
They are empowered by their triumph against Belgium and look set for qualification if they get one more point from their next two matches. If they beat Ukraine, they'll record two consecutive wins at the Euros for the first time. They have won each of their last three games without conceding, so the defense looks in excellent shape. Slovakia only lost two of their previous 12 official games (W8, D2).
Slovakia beat Ukraine 4-1 in their most recent game, albeit back in November 2018. But Ukraine lead the overall head-to-head with three wins to two. Three other games finished in draws. Ukraine has lost eight of its last nine matches at the Euros and failed to score in seven of their previous nine clashes at the final tournament. They will look to up their game as they are aware they're playing their biggest chance of making it past the group stage.
