Tottenham vs Newcastle Picks and Predictions: Kane to Reign Once Again

Both Tottenham and Newcastle have looked improved since the transfer window, but Spurs pack a lot of punch between Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, among others. Spurs should win, Kane should score, and this game should see plenty of fireworks.

Spurs welcome Newcastle to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday with both teams looking up the table. Spurs have hopes of catching their North London rivals Arsenal and grabbing that spot in the top four while Newcastle are looking towards a mid-table finish with the club looking unlikely to get pulled into a relegation dogfight.

Side analysis

Newcastle’s trip to London to face Spurs is the final of Sunday’s pair of Premier League games. The atmosphere should be rocking at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with both clubs having improved significantly since the January transfer window.

A nice run of results under Antonio Conte has seen Spurs set their sights on finishing fourth in the Premier League, a space currently occupied by their North London rivals Arsenal. It won’t be easy with the Gunners looking improved under Mikel Arteta but it’s possible, especially with Harry Kane starting to look like the player we’ve seen in previous seasons. Newcastle started 2022 looking nervously downward but they should be safe unless something drastically horrible happens.

The January window helped elevate these teams with the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski especially being a huge boost for Spurs. Enough has been written about Kulusevski already, but the Swede has become the third part of Spurs' attacking trident alongside Kane and Heung-Min Son and already looks like a great foil for that pair. In just nine Premier League appearances, two of which were from the bench, he’s scored twice and added four assists. Bentancur has also greatly improved the Spurs midfield. Not only has he improved the team personally but it seems like his presence has helped Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with the Dane looking more composed alongside the Uruguayan.

For Newcastle, it was largely the defensive arrivals that have improved the team by giving Eddie Howe a back four that already looks seriously upgraded compared to what he already had. England international Kieran Trippier, who’ll be missing this game, has added a level of experience and professionalism that already makes it look like money well spent. That Saudi money, controversial as it may be, also helped the team sign Chris Wood from fellow strugglers Burnley and Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes. Guimaraes was a player that many bigger clubs coveted and although he’s still settling into life in the Premier League you can see there is a real player there. Guimaraes will be joined by Joe Willock and Joelinton in the middle of the park and their battle against Hojbjerg and Bentancur will be key, but it’s a battle I see Spurs winning.

Newcastle’s results have improved since Eddie Howe's arrival, but they’ve lost to Chelsea and most recently Everton in the past two games. Without Trippier, they don’t look quite as composed and the loss to Everton should be a concern. In theory, they’re still in the relegation battle, but there are too many teams below them, all far worse, for them to really worry. That said, this is a difficult task against a Spurs team who’ve won four of their past five Premier League games, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Howe will likely set his team up in a 4-3-3 against Conte’s 3-4-3 but the Son-Kane-Kulusevski trio up front will cause damage against Newcastle’s defense, despite their recent improvement. Conte’s men should hit the ground where they left off and get three points at home to Newcastle, back them to win even at short -195 odds.

Prediction: Tottenham (-195 at FanDuel)

Over/Under analysis

We’ve talked about Spurs' recent improvement in front of goal, as evidenced by the 16 goals scored in their past five games. This is a team that is scoring — and often conceding — a lot of goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Over has landed in 71.4% of their home games this season and of the four games that have seen Under three goals scored, it’s worth noting that two were at the start of the season. Six of the club's past seven at the stadium have gone Over 2.5 goals and we’ll be backing that to continue.

Spurs are scoring at will with Kane and Son finding their feet. Back the Over, it should come in.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals (-125 at bet365)

Best bet

It’s not the wildest bet but you can't look beyond backing Harry Kane to score, especially at odds of -110. The England striker started the season poorly, perhaps disappointed by England’s loss in the final of the Euros and perhaps frustrated by the move to Manchester City. Some wondered if the 28-year-old had lost his mojo but he’s started to look like one of the world’s best players again in recent months.

Heung-Min Son has actually scored one more Premier League goal than Kane this season and can be backed for superior odds but it’s Kane who has been in red hot form and returns from an international break in which he scored another goal for England as he closes in on becoming his nation’s highest goalscorer.

Since the start of February, he’s scored nine times for Spurs across all competitions, and the price on him scoring on Sunday against a defense missing its best player in Kieran Trippier is very attractive.

Pick: Harry Kane to score (-110 at DraftKings)
