Side analysis

We’re being treated to two Premier League games on Sunday, the first of which sees West Ham welcome Everton to East London. The men in charge of both clubs know their rivals well. Everton’s Frank Lampard began his career at West Ham before a move across London saw him become a Chelsea legend and widely disliked at his former club. David Moyes, now manager at West Ham, spent 13 great years at Everton.

When the two meet on Sunday, it’ll see both clubs at very different ends of the Premier League. Everton are battling for their survival and the club is in very real danger of dropping out of the top division, which they’ve been in since 1954. West Ham may be outsiders in the race for the top four and a Champions League spot but they still have a shot and — failing that — should qualify for the Europa League.

The Europa League casts a long shadow on this fixture with West Ham’s current campaign seeing them in the quarterfinals against Lyon, with the first leg taking place next week. Their run in Europe feels special and fans are starting to believe that this is their time. Before the international break, they bossed a talented Sevilla team to win 2-0, overcoming a 1-0 first-leg defeat. The performance that day, and the celebrations that followed, were magical, but a defeat against Spurs the following week saw a team that looked tired from the drama.

David Moyes will set West Ham up in their usual 4-2-3-1 and has a fairly clean bill of health with only long-term absentees Vladimir Coufal and Angelo Ogbonna missing. There are reports that Jarrod Bowen is set to return, a huge boost ahead of that game against Lyon, but I’d expect to see him start on the bench. The core of the lineup will likely remain the same with the midfield anchored by the world-class Declan Rice and brilliant Tomas Soucek. Moyes has been consistent with his team selections through the season and it’s one of the reasons that they’ve had such a good year, but you do wonder if that will start to cause problems as they reach key games like the upcoming match versus Lyon.

Everton will be without Allan, who got a harsh red card against Newcastle, but they’ll have Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front, which will be key to their hopes both in this game and indeed in staying in the Premier League. The biggest question is who’ll partner Abdoulaye Doucoure in holding the midfield with some suggesting that Donny van de Beek will get the nod. The Dutchman hasn’t excelled since joining Everton, something that will shock the many Man United fans who seemed to believe it was a travesty that neither of their past two manages used the player regularly.

West Ham are the better of these two teams but that game against Lyon in the Europa League concerns me. The players took their feet off the gas in the first half against Spurs last time out and I’m worried they’ll have an eye looking ahead to that upcoming game, arguably the biggest in the club’s recent history. They’re professional players with a great manager but if I were them, I’d probably be pulling out of any challenges that could put them out of that game. For that reason, I’m not too keen on backing them at -134 odds.

Instead, I’m backing the draw because Everton ultimately need it more than West Ham and I’d expect their performance to show that. Everton have had a few dismal performances over the past two months but there have been glimmers of hope, including that victory over Newcastle despite having 10 men and the 1-0 loss to Man City in which they were great and really should have had a penalty, too. I’m not brave enough to pick the Everton win but a draw looks tasty at the price.

Prediction: Draw (+280 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

The sportsbooks have this as a pick’em. Everton’s road games have seen Over 2.5 goals 61.5% of the time and 60% of West Ham’s games at the London Stadium have also seen Over 2.5 goals but I’d actually go against the trends and back Under 2.5 here.

As mentioned above, I don’t think we’re going to see West Ham playing at their best, which makes a lower-scoring game more likely. For Everton, it’s essential they play tight and compact and try to get anything from this match.

In Everton’s past five Premier League games, there’s only been one with three or more goals and it’s clear that Lampard has placed an importance on the team being harder to beat. Despite having 10 men in both of their last games, they’ve still managed to have low-scoring results, with a 1-0 win and defeat coming in that time.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals (-110 at bet365)

Best bet

I was originally going to pick Everton’s talisman Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score as the best bet of this game, given how key he will be to their survival. However, when it really comes down to it, the bet I’m most confident in is Under 2.5 goals.

The odds are reasonable and I see this game finishing as a 0-0 or 1-1 draw. It’s hard to see a scenario in which this game becomes a shootout, especially with Frank Lampard having had two weeks to coach his team during the international break.

You can be confident in Under 2.5 goals landing, so back it, it’s the best bet of West Ham vs. Everton.

Pick: Under 2.5 goals (-110)
